Cancun Food Blogger University: My First Video Debut

Transformative Journey: My Unforgettable Experience at the Cancun Food Blogger University

Just last week, I returned from an incredible adventure in Cancun, Mexico, a trip that seamlessly blended professional development with breathtaking relaxation. I had the privilege of attending the inaugural Food Blogger University, an event that truly exceeded every expectation and left me feeling invigorated and inspired. This wasn’t just a vacation; it was a pivotal moment for my digital journey, providing a wealth of knowledge that is already making a tangible difference to my blog’s trajectory.

The Genesis of a Game-Changing Trip: Why Cancun?

About six months prior, I made a firm decision: it was time to invest in a blogging conference, specifically one focused on the intricate world of food photography and the nuances of food blogging. My research quickly narrowed down the options: a conference in Chicago or the newly announced Food Blogger University in Cancun. The costs for both were surprisingly similar, making the choice delightfully easy. After all, who could resist the allure of the Caribbean? Chicago, while a fantastic city, couldn’t promise the daily sunrise vista of turquoise waters and powdery white sand that awaited me in Cancun. The thought of waking up to such a view, coupled with the promise of intensive learning, made the decision a no-brainer.

My husband, Stephen, unfortunately couldn’t join due to work commitments, but a little persuasion (involving keywords like “beach” and “free 24-hour room service”) was all it took for my mom to enthusiastically agree to tag along. Her excitement was entirely understandable; who wouldn’t want to escape to paradise?

For me, a significant draw was the opportunity to meet one of my all-time favorite food bloggers, Lindsay from Pinch of Yum. I’ve been a devoted follower of her platform for years, gleaning countless insights from her and her husband, Bjork, who dedicate considerable effort to empowering other bloggers. Their monthly income reports are genuinely fascinating, offering a transparent look into the business of blogging. Before discovering their work, I had no idea that a full-time, thriving career could be built around sharing recipes and stories online. Witnessing their growth from earning a modest $22 a month to well over $40,000 per month has been a tremendous source of inspiration and a testament to the potential within the blogging world.

I was thrilled to snap a slightly blurry but cherished fan photo with them on the closing night of the conference, a perfect memento of an inspiring encounter.

Food Blogger University: Exceeding All Expectations

As the inaugural year for Food Blogger University, it was a relatively intimate gathering, yet its impact was monumental. The conference profoundly surpassed my expectations. I initially anticipated a boost in motivation and the chance to connect with a few notable bloggers. While I certainly gained both, I also absorbed an incredible amount of practical knowledge and strategies that are already proving to be game-changers for my blog’s development.

The immediate application of just a few of the tweaks I learned has resulted in a very noticeable increase in my blog’s traffic and, consequently, its income. This initial success has only fueled my excitement to experiment with the myriad of other innovative ideas and techniques I brought back from Cancun.

Mastering Blog Growth: Key Takeaways from the Conference

The sessions at Food Blogger University were meticulously crafted, covering a diverse range of topics essential for modern digital creators. One area that particularly captivated me was video content. Despite having no prior experience, I’ve always been intrigued by the power of video, especially seeing other food bloggers produce captivating recipe videos. While the prospect felt daunting due to time constraints and the fear of adding “just one more thing” to my already packed schedule, the conference provided the necessary push and practical advice to overcome this hesitation. It’s definitely a priority for my blog in the near future, and I’m brimming with fresh ideas.

In fact, my focus on capturing video during the trip was so intense that I took fewer still photos than usual! I dedicated considerable time to creating a video blog (vlog) about the Cancun experience, featuring numerous timelapses and underwater clips. This hands-on practice, coupled with a dedicated session on video production at the conference, proved invaluable. Beyond video, we delved into critical subjects such as monetizing food blogs effectively, enhancing food photography skills, navigating collaborations with brands, and setting clear, achievable goals for blog development. Each session offered actionable insights that are pivotal for long-term growth.

Conference attendees discussing food blogging strategies

Perhaps one of the most beneficial aspects was the ample opportunity for one-on-one time with the speakers. Their willingness to sit down, review my blog personally, and offer concrete, tailored advice for improvement was exceptionally helpful. Furthermore, connecting with fellow attendees, who were all passionate and insightful, proved to be an unexpected source of learning. I found myself gaining valuable perspectives from each person I met, highlighting the power of a supportive community.

My deepest gratitude goes to Diana and Melissa for their incredible vision in conceptualizing this conference and for their tireless efforts in bringing it to life. Their dedication created an overall wonderful and truly enriching experience.

Dreams Riviera Cancun: An Unforgettable All-Inclusive Paradise

Beyond the educational aspects, the setting for the conference was nothing short of spectacular. The resort itself was, simply put, pretty phenomenal.

Dreams Riviera Cancun offered an exceptional deal for the conference attendees, and the resort itself far surpassed all my expectations. As my first experience at an all-inclusive resort, it was truly eye-opening. While I’ve enjoyed cruises where meals are included, the luxury of complimentary drinks throughout the day was a first for me, and it was absolutely spectacular.

Naturally, I indulged in an array of fruity, frozen beverages. Their mild potency was actually a plus, allowing me to enjoy three in a row by noon without feeling overly guilty! This freedom to enjoy without constantly reaching for my wallet added an unparalleled layer of relaxation to the entire stay.

The complimentary mini-bar in our room, restocked daily, alongside the convenient 24-hour room service, quickly became huge favorites. I enjoyed more than one leisurely breakfast in bed, savoring the tranquility of the mornings. We opted to upgrade to a room with a “plunge pool,” a feature I highlighted in my vlog, and it was absolutely worth every extra penny. Having our own private pool just steps from our door provided an exclusive haven of relaxation.

Beyond the Conference: Exploring the Beauty of the Riviera Maya

Cancun’s intense humidity was certainly a memorable aspect of the trip; every time I stepped out of the air-conditioned comfort of my room, my camera lenses would fog up for a good hour until they acclimated. This resulted in some uniquely atmospheric photos and videos, adding an unexpected soft focus to many of my captures, much like the image below.

During our stay, my mom and I ventured into Playa Del Carmen twice for some local shopping and exploration. One visit was with the conference group, providing an opportunity to socialize and discover the vibrant local market together. Our second trip was just the two of us, allowing for a more leisurely stroll through the bustling streets, soaking in the atmosphere and finding unique souvenirs. It was a wonderful way to experience the local culture beyond the resort’s confines.

And for those who might have watched my vlog and wondered, yes, I did end up buying that hammock – two of them, in fact! Carrying them through the airport on my journey home definitely made for an amusing sight.

Embracing the Future of Food Blogging

This trip to Cancun was much more than just a getaway; it was a potent catalyst for both personal and professional growth. The insights gained at Food Blogger University, coupled with the rejuvenating escape to Dreams Riviera Cancun, have left me with a fresh perspective and a clear roadmap for the future of my blog. I’m excited to continue implementing new strategies, especially in video content, and to keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the digital culinary world.

With that, I’ll leave you with a visual journey of some of the breathtaking sunrises I witnessed, a perfect encapsulation of the beauty and tranquility that balanced the intense learning experience. Happy hump day, friends, and may your own journeys, whether personal or professional, be just as inspiring!
