This week marked a huge, exciting milestone for our little flock: their very first adventure outside the cozy confines of the garage and into the vast, exciting world of our backyard! Initially, they were incredibly skeptical and quite cautious, huddling together and repeatedly jumping back into the familiar confines of their box. The sheer size of the yard, the rustling leaves, the open sky, and the myriad new scents – it was all a bit overwhelming for their small senses and limited experience.

However, as curiosity often triumphs over apprehension, they gradually started to get the hang of it. One brave chick would tentatively step out, stretching its neck, followed by another, until soon, the whole troupe was cautiously exploring their new surroundings. They pecked at blades of fresh grass, scratched inquisitively at the dirt, chased invisible bugs with surprising speed, and basked in the glorious warmth of the sun. It was truly heartwarming to watch them discover new textures, sights, and sounds, taking their first tentative steps towards becoming true backyard chickens. We have a sneaking suspicion, a growing bad feeling, that at least one of our delightful chicks might actually be a rooster. While roosters can be magnificent and protective creatures, they pose a significant challenge for urban chicken keepers, especially here in Nashville. The thought of a potential rooster has us on edge.

In the city of Nashville, having a backyard rooster is unfortunately illegal due to noise ordinances and the potential for neighborhood disturbances. If our suspicions are confirmed, we would face the difficult task of finding a new, loving home for him in a more rural setting where his crowing would be welcomed and appreciated. Sexing chicks, especially when they’re young, is notoriously difficult, and even experienced hatcheries can sometimes make mistakes. So, we’re crossing all our fingers and toes, sending out positive vibes, and fervently hoping that our entire flock turns out to be a group of lovely, egg-laying hens! Building Their Forever Home: The DIY Chicken Coop Project

On a very positive and exciting note, Stephen is making excellent progress on their permanent abode! The DIY chicken coop is about halfway done, and it’s truly shaping up to be a fantastic, secure, and comfortable home for our growing flock. We’re envisioning a space where they can roost safely at night, lay their eggs in peace, and enjoy their days scratching and foraging in a protected environment. The construction process has been an exciting journey, ensuring every detail from robust ventilation to optimal predator protection is meticulously considered, reflecting the best practices for backyard chicken care.

Our goal is to have the chicken coop fully completed and ready for occupancy in approximately three to four more weeks. This timeline gives us ample time to ensure it’s perfect, and for the chicks to grow just a little bit more before they transition from their cozy brooder to their spacious new home. As for the aesthetics, I’m currently embroiled in perhaps the most crucial design decision of all: what color will the coop be? (Yes, I know, I make some incredibly profound choices in life!)
