My Roller Derby Journey: From Clueless Newbie to League President

For those who have followed my journey from the beginning, you’ve likely heard me mention roller derby more than a few times. While I often try to rein in my enthusiasm, it’s virtually impossible to keep quiet about something that has become such an integral, vibrant part of my life. Roller derby isn’t just a sport; it’s a passion, a community, and a significant chapter in my personal story that’s constantly unfolding.

My immersion into the thrilling world of roller derby actually began with my husband. During our dating years, he worked as an EMT, often picking up extra shifts at special events. One day, he found himself responding to calls at a series of roller derby games, or “bouts” as they’re called. He was instantly captivated by the speed, the strategy, and the raw athleticism on display. He quickly transformed from an on-duty medical professional into a mega-fan, eagerly sharing tales of the rink and its fierce competitors. Naturally, one of our early dates involved him taking me to witness a bout firsthand. At the time, I was heavily involved in CrossFit, always driven by a pretty competitive spirit. Watching the skaters, feeling the energy of the crowd, and seeing the intense camaraderie, something clicked. It wasn’t long before I was signing up for my first “Derby 101” class, harboring dreams of joining a team.

The Humbling Beginning: When Confidence Met Reality

I distinctly remember walking into that first session feeling an almost absurd level of confidence. My thought process was simple: “I’m fit, I train regularly, I’ll pick this up in no time!” Oh, how profoundly mistaken I was. My fitness level, while certainly a foundational asset, meant absolutely nothing if I couldn’t actually *skate*. The sheer act of standing on eight wheels felt alien and terrifying. I spent a good twenty minutes on the sidelines, meticulously pretending to tie and re-tie my laces, just to avoid the inevitable embarrassment of falling flat on my face in front of everyone. It was a humbling experience, a stark realization that this sport required a completely new set of skills, and my athletic background, while helpful, wouldn’t simply translate.

The Grueling Six Weeks and the Test of Resilience

Back then, all aspiring skaters embarked on a rigorous six-week training course. This intensive program culminated in a comprehensive test designed to determine if you possessed the fundamental skills and stamina required to officially join the team. It was essentially a multi-faceted tryout, demanding proficiency in various skating techniques, falls, and speed challenges. Among all the girls who were taking the test alongside me, I was, by a wide margin, the least accomplished. A significant portion of the test involved completing twenty-five laps around the track within a stringent five-minute timeframe. Most of my peers were able to conquer this particular challenge within just a couple of weeks of starting our training program. I, on the other hand, struggled immensely. It wasn’t until the very day of the final test that I finally managed to complete all the laps within the allotted time. Every last trace of my initial cockiness had been thoroughly wiped away, replaced by a deep respect for the sport and a newfound appreciation for the sheer effort it demanded.

Despite my tenacious effort, I didn’t pass the test on my first attempt. It was a setback, but it only fueled my determination. I wasn’t going to let this nascent passion slip away. I redoubled my efforts, practiced tirelessly, and approached the second round with a renewed focus and understanding of what it truly took. My perseverance paid off! In October of 2010, after weeks of sweat, falls, and unwavering dedication, I officially became a member of the Nashville Rollergirls. That day was an absolute triumph, marking the beginning of an incredible chapter in my life, filled with challenges, growth, and unparalleled rewards.

More Than a Sport: The Unbreakable Bond of the Derby Community

Since that joyous day, I’ve become increasingly engulfed in the vibrant ecosystem of the roller derby league. My journey has taken me from a nervous newbie to serving as the President of the league, a role I embrace with immense pride and dedication. This past season, I even had the honor of skating as a member of the prestigious Music City All Stars team, representing our league on a higher competitive stage. And let me tell you, I’ve cherished every single minute of it. The thrill of the competition, the physicality of the sport, the relentless hard work, and especially the profound sense of family – these are the pillars that define my derby experience.

The roller derby community is unlike any other. It’s truly like having a giant, extended family of sisters. We might drive each other crazy at times, much like any family, but there’s an unwavering bond that transcends the track. This network of strong, resilient women is one you can absolutely count on when you need anything, big or small. Whether it’s a late-night call for a safe ride home after one too many celebrations, an urgent need for a dog-sitter for an impromptu trip, or just a shoulder to lean on after a tough day, my derby family is always there. This incredible support system, built on shared experiences, mutual respect, and a collective passion for the sport, is one of the most unexpected and cherished gifts roller derby has given me. It’s a testament to the power of shared struggle and triumph, forging connections that last a lifetime.

Gearing Up for the Season and Debunking Derby Myths

We’ve just wrapped up the off-season, a period of rest and strategic planning, but things are truly starting to kick back into high gear this week. With the energy building for the upcoming season, I felt now was the perfect moment to share this insight into my roller derby world. For the remainder of the year, and likely until at least September, I won’t be able to hold back my passion for roller derby. Consider yourselves warned: you’ll be hearing a lot more about it, both here and in conversation!

And while we’re on the subject, let’s address some common misconceptions. YES, roller derby is unequivocally a real sport. It’s a full-contact, strategic athletic endeavor that demands immense skill, agility, and mental fortitude. NO, it is absolutely NOT rehearsed, fake, or choreographed in any way. Every hit, every block, every jam is live, intense, and unpredictable. YES, we work incredibly hard. Our commitment includes practicing for two intensive hours, three to four times a week, just for on-skates training. Beyond the physical demands, we also collectively run the entire business side of our league – managing finances, promotions, events, and community outreach, all on a volunteer basis. Additionally, we cross-train together one to three times a week, focusing on strength, endurance, and injury prevention. YES, we’re all a little crazy and utterly obsessed with the sport, but it’s a healthy, exhilarating obsession. If you don’t want to get an earful about the intricacies of strategies or be constantly invited to watch a bout, then perhaps don’t ask about it (but please, definitely DO ask about it – we love to share!). It’s a sport that builds not just strong bodies, but strong minds and even stronger communities.
