Just last weekend, the heart of South Carolina, Columbia, became the battleground for an unforgettable roller derby tournament. Our team embarked on this journey with determination, and I’m absolutely thrilled to share that we didn’t just compete – we dominated! We emerged victorious in ALL THREE of our games, a feat that fills us with immense pride and validates countless hours of training, strategizing, and pushing our limits. The energy on the track was electric, each jam a testament to our collective grit and teamwork. The roar of the crowd, the thud of skates, and the synchronized movements of our skaters created an atmosphere that was both fiercely competitive and incredibly inspiring.
Winning all our games wasn’t merely about the scoreboard; it was about the culmination of months of dedication, the unwavering support among teammates, and the sheer joy of executing our strategies perfectly under pressure. The feeling of unity and accomplishment as we celebrated each victory was palpable. After our final triumphant game of the weekend, the celebration continued with well-deserved shenanigans, laughter, and camaraderie. A few precious hours of sleep were all I could manage before it was back to the daily grind, returning to work with a heart full of derby glory but a body yearning for more rest. Such is the life of an athlete juggling multiple responsibilities, always pushing forward.
Closing the Chapter: The Final Stretch of Graduate School
Amidst the roller derby excitement, another monumental chapter in my life reached its conclusion last night: my LAST CLASS of grad school! The sheer relief and overwhelming joy are almost impossible to articulate. For years, graduate school has been a significant part of my identity, a journey of relentless learning, late-night study sessions, countless research papers, and profound personal growth. To finally stand at the precipice of completion is an emotion that transcends words.
This feeling of elation is so profound that my immediate instinct was to bake a giant chocolate cake and devour every single slice in celebratory abandon. The thought of that rich, decadent dessert, a symbol of sweet victory, was incredibly tempting. Alas, time, as it often does, is a cruel mistress. Between the lingering effects of the tournament and the imminent travel plans, there’s simply no time for such an indulgent baking project (and if I’m being honest, baking still holds a slight intimidation factor for me!). Instead, my next few nights will be dedicated to diligently finishing my final grad school paper – the last academic hurdle – and packing my bags for another exciting adventure in Florida. The finish line is so close, and the prospect of officially graduating is an incredible motivator.

A significant portion of our team is embracing the opportunity to extend our stay, flying down a day early and departing a day late to fully immerse ourselves in a little much-needed beach time. The excitement for this mini-vacation is simply off the charts!
It’s hard to believe, but it has been almost two years since I last visited a truly warm beach. “Warm” is the operative word here, as the feeling of soft sand between my toes and the gentle lapping of warm ocean waves is something I’ve yearned for. This trip perfectly blends my passion for roller derby with the irresistible call of a tropical escape. It’s an ideal way to decompress after an intense academic period and re-energize before diving back into the next phase of life. We’re looking forward to exploring Fort Lauderdale, soaking up the sun, and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.
