Welcome to this month’s detailed traffic and income report! This marks my fifth consecutive income report, a journey I began in January of this year. Each month, sharing these insights deepens my gratitude for embarking on this transparent blogging endeavor. These reports have not only served as a critical self-assessment tool, pushing me to analyze performance and set ambitious goals, but they’ve also become an invaluable way to connect with a wider community of dedicated bloggers. The support and engagement from you all truly make this process worthwhile.
Unlike the previous month, May was a period of intense focus and strategic effort. I implemented a new system of scheduling dedicated time blocks for essential tasks that often get overlooked or postponed. This structured approach, which I’ll delve into further, proved incredibly effective. The hard work undeniably paid off, as I’m thrilled to announce that May shattered all previous records, achieving my highest pageview count ever! It’s an incredibly validating milestone and a testament to the power of consistent effort and thoughtful planning.
For those new to these monthly updates, a quick recap: I started publishing these reports in January 2016, with the intention of providing a comprehensive overview of my blog’s income, expenses, and traffic metrics. Beyond the numbers, each report highlights a specific area of focus for the month, allowing me to share practical insights and lessons learned. This transparency has been immensely beneficial for my own growth and has fostered a vibrant exchange of ideas within the blogging community.
Now, let’s dive into the specifics of May’s performance!
Record-Breaking Traffic: An In-Depth Look at May’s Performance
Traffic Overview: Shattering Expectations

May truly stands out as a landmark month for my blog’s traffic. After what felt like a prolonged plateau, experiencing such substantial growth – an increase of approximately 15,000 pageviews compared to April – is incredibly motivating. This surge in traffic is particularly significant given that the online food blogging world often experiences a natural slowdown during this time of year. To not only maintain but to significantly increase engagement during a traditionally “slow season” is a huge win and indicates that our content and promotional strategies are resonating with a growing audience.
This growth isn’t just about the numbers; it reflects an expanding reach and a deeper connection with readers. It reinforces the idea that strategic content creation combined with diligent promotion can yield remarkable results, even when external factors might suggest otherwise. This achievement fuels my determination to continue refining our approach and exploring new avenues for growth, ensuring the blog reaches its full potential.
New vs. Returning Visitors: Building a Loyal Community
Cultivating a loyal readership has always been a core objective for my blog. As you may recall, one of my primary goals set at the beginning of the year was to consistently increase the percentage of monthly returning visitors. I’m delighted to report steady progress on this front. Starting the year at 17.3%, we’ve now reached 20.2% returning visitors in May. While the increase might seem gradual, its consistent nature is what truly matters. It signifies that the content, recipes, and overall experience are compelling enough to encourage readers to come back, time and time again.
This metric is incredibly important as returning visitors often translate into more engaged readers, higher pageviews per session, and a stronger community around the blog. It’s not just about attracting new eyes, but about fostering a sense of belonging and value for those who choose to return. A heartfelt thank you to every single one of you who continues to visit and support this platform – your consistent presence means more than words can express.
Top Ten Traffic Sources: The Power of Organic Search

Another monumental achievement for May is the rise of organic Google traffic to become my number one traffic source. This is a significant milestone, representing a strategic victory after months of dedicated effort. I’ve been working tirelessly to optimize my blog for search engines, researching the latest SEO best practices, and diligently applying them to every new and existing post. Seeing this hard work translate into tangible results – with readers discovering my content directly through Google searches – is incredibly rewarding.
My ongoing SEO strategy involves a multi-faceted approach: focusing on comprehensive keyword research, optimizing meta descriptions and titles, ensuring high-quality, long-form content, improving site speed, and securing valuable backlinks. This organic growth indicates that Google’s algorithms are increasingly recognizing the authority and relevance of my content within the food niche. Moving forward, I plan to delve deeper into my analytics to identify which specific recipes are performing best in Google searches, analyzing their ranking positions against similar content. This analysis will inform future content creation and optimization efforts, helping us capitalize further on the immense potential of organic search. I’ll aim to share these insights in a future report.
Beyond Google, our other traffic sources have remained largely consistent this month, which is a positive sign of stability across diverse platforms. Pinterest continues to be a strong visual driver, while direct and social referrals maintain a steady flow of engaged users. This diversified traffic portfolio ensures resilience and reduces reliance on a single source, contributing to overall blog health and growth.

Key Initiatives in May: Video Production and Strategic Scheduling
May was a month of significant evolution, primarily driven by two major initiatives: diving into video production and implementing a robust scheduling system. These areas represent strategic investments in the blog’s future and operational efficiency.
Embracing Video Content: A New Frontier
VIDEO was undoubtedly the biggest focus this past month! Have you had a chance to check out my first few recipe videos? You can find them all on the YouTube channel HERE. I dedicated a considerable amount of time to comprehensive research, covering everything from proper video shooting techniques and optimal setup to selecting the right editing software and mastering special effects. Frankly, I am incredibly proud of myself for finally taking the leap into video creation. For over a year, the idea of producing video content loomed large, often feeling overwhelming and complex. It was easy to put off, considering the perceived daunting learning curve and the myriad technical nuances involved. However, I am profoundly glad I pushed past that hesitation.
So far, I’m absolutely loving the process of creating videos. My initial goal is to produce one recipe video each week. I initially anticipated that finding the ideal time for shooting, with the right lighting conditions, would be the primary challenge. However, it turns out that the most demanding aspect for me is dedicating the necessary time to sit down and meticulously edit each video. I’ve chosen to edit with Adobe Premiere Pro, a decision that significantly impacts the editing timeline. My rationale for opting for Premiere Pro over simpler alternatives like iMovie is driven by a desire to infuse my videos with the polished, professional touches that help them stand out. While recipe videos are still a relatively new frontier in the food blogging landscape, it’s rapidly becoming a saturated market. To cut through the noise, I believe a high standard of production quality is essential. The learning curve with Premiere Pro has been steep; what might be simple edits for an experienced user take me considerably longer. Yet, I am confident that with continued practice, my efficiency will improve dramatically. My aspiration is to eventually reduce my editing time by half, or even by two-thirds. I’ll provide a comprehensive update on my video journey and progress in next month’s report!
A colossal shoutout and heartfelt thanks go to Trevor from The Blog Village for his invaluable guidance and unwavering support. Trevor is an undisputed video expert, producing genuinely spectacular recipe videos for his wife’s renowned blog, Show Me The Yummy. You can witness their incredible work on their YouTube channel HERE. Trevor founded The Blog Village as an essential resource for bloggers, offering an extensive series of truly exceptional video tutorials. These cover everything from the foundational steps of setting up a blog to advanced techniques for shooting and editing professional-grade videos. My initial motivation for joining was specifically to access his video creation tutorials, and I can unequivocally state that I would not have had the confidence to begin producing videos without the comprehensive education and practical assistance provided by The Blog Village and Trevor’s personal mentorship. (For the record, this endorsement is entirely unsolicited and unpaid; I simply genuinely appreciate and highly recommend The Blog Village to anyone interested in elevating their video content!)
Strategic Scheduling: Optimizing Promotion and Engagement
As highlighted earlier, one of my primary focuses for May was the implementation of a structured scheduling system. For a long time, I’ve heard the wise adage that successful content creators spend approximately 20% of their time creating new content and the remaining 80% promoting it. Historically, my percentages were unfortunately inverted. With hundreds of valuable recipes now residing in my blog archives, it’s become abundantly clear that the time for proper, consistent promotion is long overdue. To effectively achieve this, organization is paramount.
I initiated a system of blocking out specific time slots on my calendar for various essential promotional tasks that previously often fell by the wayside. These include, but are not limited to, scheduling Facebook posts, curating and pinning content on Pinterest, and engaging with the community. For instance, a recurring weekly appointment now appears on my calendar: “Schedule Facebook posts for the next 7 days.” This dedicated time has proven remarkably effective in keeping me on task and ensuring a consistent presence across social platforms. The results have been encouraging; I genuinely feel this strategic scheduling has noticeably increased engagement with my blog content and contributed to a subtle yet consistent uptick in overall traffic. This methodical approach ensures that previously created, high-quality content continues to reach new audiences and provides ongoing value to existing readers.
Strategic Focus for the Next 30 Days: Mastering Affiliate Marketing
Beyond continuing to refine my video production skills and maintaining the discipline of my new scheduling system, a significant goal for the upcoming 30 days is to master AFFILIATE MARKETING. Through platforms like Share-A-Sale, I’ve identified numerous reputable brands whose products and services I genuinely admire and would be proud to recommend to my blog’s audience. I’ve successfully applied to and been accepted into several of these affiliate programs. The next crucial step is to integrate these brands into my blog content in a way that feels utterly natural, authentic, and never overly “sales-person-like.”
My strategy is not to promote a vast array of products but to selectively partner with and deeply promote a few chosen brands that genuinely resonate with my values and audience’s needs. A prime example of this successful approach is my long-standing partnership with Greater Than Gatsby. It’s been 18 months since I first started promoting their Lightroom presets and Photoshop actions as an affiliate. To this day, I continue to genuinely love and use their products in my food photography workflow. Even without actively creating new promotional content about them recently, their affiliate program consistently generates approximately $40-$50 in passive income each month. Cumulatively, this single affiliate partnership has earned me about $2500, all stemming from just three dedicated blog posts. A testament to the power of evergreen content and effective SEO, if you Google “Greater Than Gatsby,” one of my original posts about their products frequently appears on the first page of search results. This sustained visibility significantly contributes to ongoing affiliate sales. My goal for the coming month is to thoughtfully identify and integrate a few more of my absolute favorite, high-value brands into this short list of trusted affiliates on the blog, applying the same principles of authenticity, integration, and long-term content strategy.
A Heartfelt Thank You to My Community
Your continuous support and visits to my blog make all of this possible. It is because of this vibrant community that I am able to continue sponsoring a young girl in Haiti this month, a commitment I plan to uphold for the foreseeable future. My ongoing pledge is to donate 10% of all blog earnings to this meaningful cause. This opportunity to give back, even in a small way for now, is a profound privilege, and it’s entirely thanks to each and every one of you who engages with my content. Thank you for being an integral part of this journey and for helping to make a difference.
