Now, it’s time to add air frying to our mastery list.

Why Air-Frying Tofu Is My Absolute Favorite Way to Cook It
The air fryer has revolutionized how I prepare tofu, consistently delivering superior results. Here’s why this method stands out:
- Achieves Unparalleled Crispiness: I’ve experimented with every imaginable method for cooking tofu, and the air fryer consistently produces the most intensely crispy texture. It creates a satisfying crunch that’s hard to replicate with other techniques.
- A Healthier & Lighter Alternative to Frying: While traditional deep-frying can yield crispy results, it often involves excessive oil, which can be messy and adds unnecessary calories. Air frying achieves similar crispiness with minimal oil, offering a lighter, healthier option without sacrificing texture.
- Incredibly Fast and Convenient: With a total cook time of just 15-20 minutes, air frying allows you to quickly prepare delicious tofu while you focus on other components of your meal. It’s perfect for busy evenings when you want a nutritious yet speedy dish.

Essential Ingredients for Air Fryer Tofu Perfection
Creating perfectly crispy air fryer tofu requires only a handful of common ingredients. The magic lies not just in the ingredients themselves, but how they come together to achieve that sought-after texture and flavor.
- Super Firm Tofu (15-16 oz block): This is my top recommendation. Super firm tofu, sometimes labeled “high-protein tofu,” is denser and comes pre-pressed, meaning it requires no extra effort to remove excess water. This significantly reduces prep time and contributes to a superior crispy texture. If you opt for firm or extra-firm tofu, ensure you press it thoroughly before use to achieve the best results. Pressing helps remove moisture, which is key for crispiness.
- Toasted Sesame Oil (2 teaspoons): A small amount of oil is essential for helping the tofu brown and become crispy in the air fryer, and toasted sesame oil adds a wonderful depth of nutty, aromatic flavor. You can use another neutral oil like avocado or olive oil if preferred, but sesame oil truly elevates the taste.
- Soy Sauce (1 ½ tablespoons): This provides a foundational savory, umami flavor and saltiness that penetrates the tofu. For a gluten-free alternative, tamari or coconut aminos work equally well. It helps to season the tofu from the inside out, making every bite flavorful.
- Cornstarch (2 tablespoons): This is the secret weapon for ultimate crispiness! Coating the tofu in cornstarch creates a thin, delicate crust that becomes incredibly crunchy when air-fried. Arrowroot powder is an excellent substitute if you don’t have cornstarch on hand.
- Fine Sea Salt (½ teaspoon) & Freshly Cracked Black Pepper (½ teaspoon): These fundamental seasonings enhance all the other flavors, bringing balance and a subtle kick to the tofu. Adjust to your personal taste.
- OPTIONAL: Other Spices as Desired: While delicious as written, this recipe serves as a fantastic blank canvas. Feel free to incorporate your favorite spices like garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cumin, or a touch of nutritional yeast for a cheesy umami boost.

Ingredients
- 15-16 oz tofu , super firm ideally*
- 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil, or other oil
- 1 ½ tablespoons soy sauce, (or amino acids)
- ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
- ½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch, (arrowroot powder also works well)
- OPTIONAL: other spices as desired*
Instructions
-
Pre-heat your air fryer to 400°F (some models may max out at 390°F, which is perfectly fine). Allow it to come to temperature while you prepare the tofu.
-
Into a large mixing bowl, gently tear the block of tofu into medium, irregular chunks. Aim for pieces roughly the size of a quarter. While you can certainly cut the tofu into cubes, tearing it creates more jagged, uneven edges, which become wonderfully crispy in the air fryer, maximizing that delightful crunch!

-
Add the sesame oil, soy sauce, sea salt, and black pepper to the bowl with the torn tofu. Toss gently to ensure all pieces are evenly coated. Next, sprinkle the cornstarch over the seasoned tofu. Toss again thoroughly until every piece is fully covered with a light, dusty coating. This cornstarch layer is critical for achieving that signature crispiness.

-
Carefully arrange the coated tofu pieces in a single layer in your preheated air fryer basket, ensuring not to overcrowd it. It’s crucial to leave at least a small amount of space between each piece for optimal air circulation, which is essential for crisping. If necessary, cook in batches to avoid overcrowding. Air fry for 10 minutes. Then, open the basket, toss the tofu to redistribute, and air fry for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the tofu reaches your desired level of golden-brown crispiness. I typically find 15 minutes total yields perfect results.

-
Once golden and perfectly crispy, remove the tofu from the air fryer. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, as part of a meal, or simply enjoy it on its own as a protein-packed snack! ENJOY!
Notes & Tips for Success
- Choosing Your Tofu: For the absolute best results, I highly recommend using super firm tofu (sometimes labeled high-protein tofu). This type requires no pressing, saving you precious prep time, and yields the crispiest texture due to its lower water content. If you are using firm or extra-firm tofu, it’s crucial to press out the excess moisture thoroughly before seasoning and cooking.
- Customizing with Spices: This recipe is intentionally kept relatively simple to be incredibly versatile, pairing well with almost any sauce or meal. However, if you plan to enjoy the tofu on its own or want to infuse more flavor, feel free to add your favorite spices. Garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, curry powder, or a pre-made spice blend can all add wonderful dimensions of flavor. A tablespoon or two of nutritional yeast can also add a delightful umami and “cheesy” note.
- Marinating for Deeper Flavor: If you’re looking to elevate the flavor even further, consider marinating your tofu before air frying. I have a dedicated blog post about marinating tofu, including SIX different marinade flavors. If you choose to marinate, you can typically skip the soy sauce and oil in this specific recipe, as the marinade should provide ample flavor and moisture. Ensure the tofu isn’t too wet from the marinade before adding cornstarch, or it might not crisp as well.
- Preventing Overcrowding: This is a critical step for crispy tofu. Overcrowding the air fryer basket prevents proper air circulation, leading to steamed instead of crispy tofu. Cook in batches if necessary, allowing enough space between each piece for the hot air to circulate freely.
- Shaking the Basket: Don’t forget to shake or toss the tofu halfway through cooking. This ensures even crisping on all sides and prevents any pieces from sticking.

Serving Suggestions for Your Crispy Air Fryer Tofu
The versatility of air fryer tofu makes it an excellent addition to a wide array of meals. Its satisfying crispiness and neutral yet flavorful base mean it can adapt to various cuisines and dietary preferences. Here are some popular ways to enjoy it:
- As a Main Protein: Serve alongside steamed rice, quinoa, or noodles with a side of sautéed vegetables for a complete and wholesome meal.
- In Grain Bowls: Add it to your favorite Buddha bowls or power bowls with a base of grains, fresh or roasted vegetables, and a creamy dressing.
- Stir-Fries: Toss the crispy tofu into your stir-fries during the last few minutes of cooking to maintain its crunch while integrating it with your favorite sauce and veggies.
- Salads and Wraps: Elevate any salad or wrap by adding these crunchy tofu bites for an extra boost of protein and texture.
- Snack Attack: Enjoy it on its own as a healthy, protein-rich snack, perhaps with a side of sriracha mayo or sweet chili sauce.
- Tacos or Lettuce Wraps: Crumble or cube the tofu and use it as a filling for plant-based tacos, burritos, or light and refreshing lettuce wraps.
Storage and Reheating Tips to Maintain Crispiness
While air fryer tofu is best enjoyed fresh, you can store and reheat it to enjoy later. The key is to try and preserve its crispy texture:
- Storage: Allow any leftover tofu to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Placing a paper towel at the bottom of the container can help absorb any residual moisture.
- Reheating: To bring back some of that amazing crispiness, avoid the microwave. Instead, reheat the tofu in your air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. Alternatively, you can reheat it in a conventional oven on a baking sheet at 375°F (190°C) for 10-15 minutes, flipping once.
The Nutritional Powerhouse: Why Tofu is a Great Choice
Beyond its incredible versatility and ability to achieve a fantastic crispy texture, tofu is a nutritional star. It’s a complete plant-based protein, meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids necessary for human health. Tofu is also an excellent source of iron, calcium, and manganese, making it a valuable component of a healthy, balanced diet, especially for those following vegetarian or vegan lifestyles. Incorporating crispy air fryer tofu into your meals is an easy and delicious way to boost your nutrient intake.
With this comprehensive guide, you now have all the tools and tips needed to master the art of air fryer tofu.
