Essential Ingredients for Your Sesame Tofu

Crafting this delightful sesame tofu is incredibly straightforward, relying on a selection of simple, readily available ingredients. You’ll likely find many of these staples already in your pantry or fridge, making this a convenient and accessible recipe for any home cook. Each component plays a vital role in building the layered flavors and satisfying textures of this dish.

ingredients to make crispy sesame tofu with broccoli
  • Tofu: The star of our show! I highly recommend using super firm tofu for the best results, as it requires minimal pressing and achieves a wonderfully dense, meaty texture. Firm or extra-firm tofu also works beautifully, but will benefit from thorough pressing to remove excess moisture. Pressing is crucial for maximizing flavor absorption and ensuring your tofu gets delightfully crispy. For a comprehensive guide, check out my detailed instructions on pressing tofu.
  • For the Sauce: The heart of this recipe lies in its balanced, flavorful sauce. You’ll need:
    • Vegetable Broth: Forms the savory base, adding depth and richness.
    • Orange Juice: Contributes a bright, tangy, and subtly sweet citrus note, reminiscent of classic orange chicken. Freshly squeezed is always best!
    • Orange Marmalade: This is our secret weapon for natural sweetness and that signature sticky glaze. If marmalade isn’t available, a touch of maple syrup can be used as a substitute, though it will alter the nuanced orange flavor slightly.
    • Soy Sauce: Provides the essential umami and salty kick. For gluten-free or soy-free options, coconut aminos are an excellent alternative.
    • Rice Wine Vinegar (or Rice Vinegar): Adds a crucial tangy acidity that balances the sweetness of the sauce.
    • Fresh Ginger: Grated ginger infuses the sauce with a warm, aromatic spice. For convenience, ginger powder can be used in a pinch, but fresh offers superior flavor.
    • Fresh Garlic: Minced garlic delivers a pungent, savory foundation that complements the ginger perfectly.
    • Cornstarch: This acts as our thickening agent, creating that desirable glossy, sticky consistency for the sauce.
  • Broccoli: We love serving this dish bowl-style with a vibrant green vegetable, and broccoli is an excellent choice due to its slightly bitter notes that beautifully contrast the sweet sauce. Feel free to use any favorite vegetable or whatever you have on hand; Brussels sprouts, snap peas, or even bell peppers would also be fantastic.
  • Oil: For pan-frying the tofu until golden and crispy. While olive oil is a versatile option, a touch of toasted sesame oil adds an extra layer of nutty, authentic Asian flavor that truly enhances the dish.
  • Salt & Pepper: Essential for seasoning the tofu and adjusting the final taste of the sauce, bringing all the delicious flavors into perfect harmony.
  • Optional for Serving: To create a complete and appealing meal, consider these garnishes:
    • Grain of Choice: Classic white rice or nutritious brown rice are ideal, but you can also serve it over quinoa, farro, or couscous for variety.
    • Sesame Seeds: Toasted sesame seeds offer a lovely crunch and visual appeal, reinforcing the “sesame” theme.
    • Green Onions: Sliced green onions provide a fresh, mild oniony bite and a beautiful pop of color.

Crafting Your Perfect Sesame Tofu: A Step-by-Step Guide

This recipe is designed for maximum flavor with minimal effort, making it a fantastic addition to your culinary repertoire. Follow these simple steps to create a show-stopping sesame tofu dish that’s bursting with incredible taste and satisfying texture. For the complete, detailed recipe, please refer to the dedicated recipe card below.

Step 1: Preparing Your Tofu for Maximum Crispiness

The foundation of truly amazing sesame tofu lies in proper preparation. Begin by pressing your tofu to remove as much excess moisture as possible. This critical step ensures that the tofu cubes become beautifully crispy when cooked and act like a sponge, eagerly absorbing every drop of the delectable sauce we’ll be making.

  • Pressing Technique: While a dedicated tofu press is incredibly efficient, you can easily achieve excellent results at home without one. Simply wrap the block of tofu in several layers of paper towels or a clean, lint-free kitchen towel. Place it on a plate and then position a heavy object on top – a cast-iron skillet, a stack of cookbooks, or even a few cans of food work perfectly. Let it press for at least 30 minutes, or up to an hour for extra-firm results.
  • Cutting the Tofu: Once pressed, transfer the tofu block to a cutting board. You have a few options for how to cut it: uniform cubes are classic and great for even cooking, thin strips offer a different mouthfeel, or you can even hand-tear it into irregular, rustic chunks for a more organic texture. For this recipe, I’ve used neatly diced tofu cubes, which provide an ideal surface area for browning and sauce absorption.

Step 2: Roasting or Steaming Your Broccoli

While optional, adding roasted or steamed broccoli to your sesame tofu bowl is highly recommended. Roasting brings out a wonderful sweetness and slight char, enhancing the overall flavor profile of your meal. Alternatively, steaming provides tender-crisp florets that offer a fresh contrast. Prepare your broccoli before or while the tofu is cooking, so everything is ready to assemble at the same time.

Step 3: Whisking Together the Sticky Sesame Sauce

This sweet and savory sauce is the star that brings all the elements of this dish together. In a medium bowl or liquid measuring cup, combine all the sauce ingredients: vegetable broth, orange juice, orange marmalade (or maple syrup), soy sauce (or coconut aminos), rice wine vinegar, grated ginger, minced garlic, and cornstarch. Whisk vigorously until the cornstarch is fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth. Set this aside; it will be poured into the skillet with the crispy tofu later, transforming into a thick, glossy, and incredibly delicious glaze.

Step 4: Achieving Crispy Perfection with Your Tofu

Heat your chosen oil (olive oil or toasted sesame oil for extra flavor) in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is shimmering hot, carefully add the pressed and cubed tofu in a single layer, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Avoid touching or moving the tofu for the first 5-7 minutes; this crucial step allows a beautiful, golden-brown crust to form on the bottom. Once adequately browned, use tongs or a spatula to flip each piece and continue cooking for a few minutes on each side until all sides are golden and crispy. This process usually takes about 15-20 minutes in total, yielding perfectly textured tofu ready to absorb the incredible sauce.

Step 5: Glazing the Tofu with the Sesame Sauce

Once your tofu has reached peak crispiness, give the prepared sauce mixture another quick whisk (as cornstarch can settle) and pour it directly into the hot pan with the tofu. The sauce will immediately begin to bubble and thicken. Stir constantly and gently to coat all the tofu pieces evenly. Continue cooking for approximately 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce has reduced, thickened into a glossy glaze, and beautifully clings to the crispy tofu. The aroma alone will have your mouth watering!

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy!

Immediately serve your delicious sesame tofu over a bed of fluffy rice or your grain of choice, alongside the steamed or roasted broccoli. For an extra touch of flavor and visual appeal, sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and freshly sliced green onions. Each bite will be a harmonious blend of crispy tofu, sticky-sweet sauce, and tender vegetables.

Expert Tips for Tofu Perfection

Achieving consistently delicious sesame tofu is easier than you think with these expert tips and variations:

  • Embrace the Press: Don’t skip pressing your tofu! This step is paramount. The drier your tofu, the crispier it will get and the better it will absorb the flavorful sauce. Super firm tofu often comes pre-pressed or requires minimal pressing, but for firm or extra-firm varieties, dedicating 30-60 minutes to pressing makes all the difference.
  • Alternative Cooking Methods for Tofu: While pan-frying yields fantastic results, you can also achieve crispy tofu using other methods:
    • Baking the Tofu: For a hands-off approach, toss pressed and cubed tofu with a light coating of cornstarch before spreading it in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and firm. You can then prepare the sauce separately and toss the baked tofu to coat. Read my guide to perfect crispy baked tofu for more details.
    • Air Frying the Tofu: The air fryer is a game-changer for crispy tofu! Cut your pressed tofu into cubes, toss with a teaspoon of oil and a tablespoon of cornstarch. Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes, shaking the basket frequently, until golden and crispy. Prepare the sauce in a pan and toss the air-fried tofu to coat. Explore my full guide on how to air fry tofu for detailed instructions.
  • The Magic of Freezing Tofu: For an even chewier, more “chicken-like” texture, consider freezing your tofu in advance. Simply place the entire block (or pre-cubed pieces) in the freezer until solid, then thaw it completely before pressing and cooking. The freezing process creates small ice crystals that expand and create tiny pockets within the tofu, resulting in a more porous, sponge-like structure that absorbs flavor beautifully and delivers a satisfyingly chewy bite. This is a fantastic technique to experiment with!
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Pan: When pan-frying, cook the tofu in batches if necessary to ensure each piece has enough space to crisp up. Overcrowding lowers the pan’s temperature, leading to steamed rather than crispy tofu.

Customizing Your Sesame Tofu Meal

One of the joys of cooking is making a dish truly your own. While this sesame tofu is incredibly delicious as-is, it’s also wonderfully versatile, allowing for easy customization to suit your dietary preferences or to utilize ingredients you already have on hand:

  • Make it Low Carb: If you’re looking to reduce your carbohydrate intake, simply swap out traditional grains like rice for cauliflower rice or even creamy mashed cauliflower. These alternatives provide a similar base without the carbs.
  • Experiment with Other Vegetables: The broccoli is a classic accompaniment, but don’t limit yourself! Feel free to substitute it with other delicious vegetables such as crisp Brussels sprouts, tender zucchini ribbons, vibrant asparagus spears, or crunchy snap peas. You can also bulk up your bowl by adding extra veggies like cubed sweet potato, thinly sliced carrots, colorful bell peppers, or additional cauliflower florets. Stir-frying mixed vegetables with the tofu before adding the sauce is another excellent option.
  • Adjust the Flavorings: This recipe offers a fantastic base, but you can always tweak it to your preference. Add a dash or two of your favorite spices or seasoned salts to enhance the profile. For those who love a bit of heat, incorporating 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper or a pinch of red pepper flakes into the sauce will add a pleasant spicy kick. A touch of sriracha or chili garlic sauce can also be swirled in at the end for fresh spice.
  • Gluten-Free Option: Ensure your soy sauce is certified gluten-free (look for tamari) and check that your vegetable broth is also gluten-free.

Meal Prepping Your Sesame Tofu for Future Enjoyment

This sesame tofu recipe is an absolute dream for meal prepping! Preparing components in advance can save you significant time during busy weeknights and ensure you have healthy, homemade meals ready to go. Here’s how to get a head start:

  1. Tofu Preparation: Press and cut your tofu into desired pieces. You can also prepare the sauce mixture in advance by whisking all the ingredients together. Store the pressed tofu in an airtight container in the fridge, and the sauce in a separate sealed container, for up to 2-3 days.
  2. Vegetable Prep: Chop your broccoli or any other chosen vegetables and store them in an airtight container in the fridge. This makes cooking them a breeze when it’s mealtime.
  3. Grain Cooking: To truly streamline your meal, cook your preferred grain (rice, quinoa, farro, etc.) ahead of time. Once cooled, store it in an airtight container in the fridge. This way, assembly becomes incredibly fast – just cook the tofu and sauce, and combine!

Storing and Reheating Leftovers

This sesame tofu dish makes for fantastic leftovers, perfect for a quick lunch or dinner. To store any remaining sesame tofu, vegetables, and rice, simply combine them in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 2-3 days. For best results when reheating:

  • Stovetop Method: To best preserve the tofu’s crispiness, rewarm the leftovers in a skillet over medium heat. A little splash of water or vegetable broth can help rehydrate the sauce. Stir occasionally until heated through.
  • Microwave Method: For a faster option, place the leftovers in a microwave-safe dish and heat in 30-60 second intervals, stirring in between, until thoroughly warm. While convenient, this method may result in slightly less crispy tofu.

  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 ½ tablespoons corn starch
  • 14-15 ounce block of tofu, pressed* and cut into bite-sized pieces
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 ½ tablespoons oil, I usually use olive oil (or toasted sesame oil)
  • For serving: grain of choice, sesame seeds, green onion

Instructions

  1. Steam your broccoli: Place a steamer basket and 1 cup of water into a medium pan. Once the water is boiling, add in the broccoli and cover. Cook for 5-8 minutes or until the broccoli is fork tender. Set aside.
  2. Make the sauce: In a bowl, whisk together the broth, orange juice, marmalade, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, ginger, garlic, and cornstarch until smooth. Set aside.
  3. Cook the tofu: In a large non-stick skillet over medium heat, heat the oil until hot. Add the tofu in a single layer, ensuring pieces do not overlap. Cook without touching for about 5 minutes to form a crust. After 5 minutes, flip and cook for a few minutes on each side (about 20 minutes total) until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Add the sauce: Pour the prepared sauce over the crispy tofu in the hot pan. Stirring often, cook for about 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens and beautifully coats the tofu.
  5. Serve: Serve the glazed tofu immediately with the steamed broccoli and your grain of choice. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions if desired. Enjoy your delicious meal!
