Picture perfectly pan-seared tofu bathed in a rich, creamy, and undeniably luscious sun-dried tomato sauce. It’s a plant-based sensation that promises to be so good, it just might inspire a proposal! Marry Me Tofu: Golden-brown tofu in a creamy Tuscan-inspired sauce, garnished with fresh herbs.

Say hello to the vegetarian cousin of the internet’s most beloved chicken dish! Our Marry Me Tofu captures all the amazing, deeply satisfying flavors of the original viral recipe, but swaps chicken for wholesome, protein-packed tofu. The result is a truly delicious, meat-free alternative that’s perfect for weeknight dinners, special occasions, or whenever you crave something truly comforting and elegant. This recipe isn’t just a substitute; it’s a celebration of plant-based cooking, proving that vegetarian meals can be just as, if not more, enticing and flavorful.

You might recall my Garlic Butter Tofu recipe, where I introduced a fun and innovative technique for cutting tofu to mimic a chicken breast. I was so excited by the results that I knew I had to use the same method for this Marry Me Tofu. While it’s completely optional, shaping the tofu this way adds a delightful visual appeal, making each piece resemble a classic chicken cutlet and elevating the entire dining experience. It’s a small touch that makes a big difference in presentation, making this dish even more “proposal-worthy.”

Marinated tofu pieces ready for cooking, showcasing the unique chicken-like cut.

One of the best parts about this unique tofu-cutting method is its commitment to zero waste. If you choose to shape your tofu into “chicken-like” pieces, you’ll inevitably have some scraps. Don’t let them go to waste! These versatile leftovers are perfect for whipping up a quick, single-serve Tofu Scramble for breakfast, or for creating a savory filling for my simple tofu tacos. I was initially concerned about waste, but I’ve discovered countless creative ways to utilize every bit of leftover tofu, ensuring nothing goes unappreciated in your kitchen.

My goal with this recipe was to stay as true as possible to the original “Marry Me Chicken” while making it completely vegetarian. The heart of the dish lies in its incredibly flavorful sauce, which is so rich and aromatic, you’ll want to drizzle it over everything! This creamy, savory sauce is infused with classic Tuscan-inspired ingredients, creating a depth of flavor that complements the pan-seared tofu beautifully. The balance of herbs, garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, and a touch of creaminess creates a truly harmonious and irresistible culinary experience.

TO MAKE THIS VEGAN: Transforming this dish into a fully vegan delight is incredibly simple! While I haven’t personally tested every single vegan alternative, I’m confident that swapping the heavy cream for full-fat coconut cream or another thick, unsweetened plant-based milk (like cashew or oat cream) would yield fantastic results. For the Parmesan cheese, a high-quality vegan Parmesan alternative, such as those made by Violife or a homemade nut-based Parmesan, would work perfectly. These simple substitutions ensure that everyone can enjoy the magic of Marry Me Tofu, regardless of dietary preferences.

Essential Ingredients for Your Marry Me Tofu

Crafting this unforgettable Marry Me Tofu involves a thoughtful selection of ingredients, each playing a crucial role in building the dish’s signature flavor and texture. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need to create this creamy, savory masterpiece:

  • Extra-Firm or Super-Firm Tofu: The foundation of our vegetarian dish. Opt for extra-firm or super-firm tofu for the best results, as it holds its shape well and gets beautifully crispy when pan-fried. Trader Joe’s super-firm tofu is a fantastic choice, often requiring no pressing.
  • Tofu Marinade: A simple yet powerful blend that infuses the tofu with incredible flavor before cooking. We’re talking olive oil, balsamic vinegar for a tangy depth, and a vibrant mix of garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. This marinade is key to making the tofu truly sing.
  • All-Purpose Flour: Used to lightly dredge the marinated tofu. This creates a delicate coating that crisps up wonderfully in the skillet, adding a satisfying texture to each bite and helping to lock in moisture.
  • Unsalted Butter: An integral part of our luxurious sauce, butter contributes to its richness and velvety smooth consistency.
  • Fresh Garlic: Because you can never have too much garlic! Finely minced garlic forms the aromatic base of our sauce, releasing its pungent, fragrant notes as it sautés.
  • Vegetable Broth: This liquid gold provides the savory depth for our sauce, building a robust flavor profile without overpowering the other ingredients. Choose a good quality broth for the best taste.
  • Heavy Cream: The secret to the sauce’s irresistible thickness and luxurious creaminess. It binds all the flavors together, creating a decadent mouthfeel. (See notes for vegan alternatives!)
  • Parmesan Cheese: A key player in the original Marry Me recipe, Parmesan adds a salty, umami-rich punch that is essential to the sauce’s complex flavor. Adjust the amount to your liking – feel free to be generous! (Again, see notes for vegan swaps!)
  • Sun-Dried Tomatoes: These intensely flavored gems are classic to this Tuscan-inspired dish. Their concentrated sweetness and tang add a vibrant burst of flavor and a beautiful color to the sauce, transforming it into something truly special.
  • Chili Flakes, Oregano, and Thyme: A trio of spices and herbs that provide warmth, earthy notes, and a hint of Mediterranean charm, rounding out the complex flavor profile of the sauce.
  • Fresh Herbs (Basil or Parsley): For a final flourish and a burst of fresh flavor, a sprinkle of freshly chopped basil or parsley before serving is highly recommended. It brightens the dish and adds an appealing visual element.

Step-by-Step Guide to Crafting Marry Me Tofu

Creating this show-stopping Marry Me Tofu is simpler than you might imagine, especially since it all comes together in one pan! Follow these steps for a guaranteed delicious outcome:

  1. Prepare the Tofu: Begin by prepping your tofu. If using super-firm tofu, pressing might not be necessary. However, for other types, I recommend checking my comprehensive guide on how to press and prep tofu. Once pressed, cut the block into three even, lengthwise pieces. For that signature “chicken breast” look, lay each piece flat and carefully trim off the top right and bottom left corners, gently rounding the edges. This creates a charming, familiar shape, though it’s purely for aesthetics! Don’t forget to make shallow diagonal cuts (about ¼ inch deep) on both sides of each piece to help absorb the marinade and sauce.
  2. Marinate for Flavor: In a shallow dish, whisk together the marinade ingredients: olive oil, balsamic vinegar, water, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Add the shaped tofu pieces to the marinade, ensuring they are fully coated. Let them marinate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to penetrate deeply. For an even more intense flavor, you can marinate the tofu overnight in the refrigerator.
  3. Sear the Tofu: Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat and add a tablespoon of olive oil. While the skillet heats, remove the tofu from the marinade, letting any excess drip off, then lightly dredge each piece in all-purpose flour, ensuring an even, thin coating. Carefully place the floured tofu into the hot skillet in a single layer. Cook for approximately 5 minutes per side, or until each piece is beautifully golden brown and crispy around the edges. Keep an eye on it to prevent burning. Once seared, remove the tofu from the pan and set it aside.
  4. Build the Irresistible Sauce: Using the same skillet, melt the butter and add the minced garlic. Sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn it. Pour in the vegetable broth and gently deglaze the pan, scraping up any delicious browned bits from the bottom. Reduce the heat to medium-low, then stir in the heavy cream, grated Parmesan cheese, chili flakes, oregano, and thyme. Let the sauce come to a gentle simmer for about 3-5 minutes, allowing it to thicken slightly and the flavors to meld.
  5. Combine and Serve: Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste. Stir in the chopped sun-dried tomatoes. Return the seared tofu pieces to the skillet, nestling them into the rich, creamy sauce. Let the dish simmer for a few more minutes, allowing the tofu to heat through and become thoroughly coated in all that deliciousness. Serve your Marry Me Tofu immediately, either on its own or alongside your favorite pasta, rice, or crusty bread. Garnish generously with fresh herbs like basil or parsley for a burst of color and aroma. Enjoy every single “proposal-worthy” bite!

Serving Suggestions and Perfect Pairings

Marry Me Tofu is a remarkably versatile dish that can be enjoyed in various ways, making it suitable for any occasion, from a casual weeknight dinner to an elegant gathering. Its rich, creamy sauce pairs wonderfully with a range of sides that can soak up every last drop of flavor.

Consider serving this delightful tofu dish over a bed of al dente pasta, such as linguine, fettuccine, or tagliatelle, to create a hearty and comforting meal. For a lighter option, pair it with fluffy white rice, quinoa, or even a low-carb cauliflower rice. A simple side of steamed green beans, roasted asparagus, or a fresh garden salad with a light vinaigrette would complement the richness of the sauce beautifully. Don’t forget a side of crusty bread to mop up that irresistible sauce – it’s a must! For a more adventurous pairing, try it with creamy polenta or mashed potatoes.

Storage and Reheating Tips

This Marry Me Tofu tastes best fresh, but it also makes for fantastic leftovers! To store, transfer any cooled leftover tofu and sauce to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3-4 days. The flavors tend to deepen beautifully overnight. When ready to reheat, you can gently warm the dish in a skillet over medium-low heat on the stovetop, adding a splash of vegetable broth or plant-based milk if the sauce has thickened too much. Alternatively, microwave in short intervals until heated through. Be careful not to overheat, as this can sometimes affect the texture of the tofu.

This Marry Me Tofu is my vegetarian take on the VIRAL Marry Me Chicken recipe that I have been seeing everywhere! It’s simple to make and packed with so much flavor!

Ingredients

For the Tofu:

  • 14 oz tofu, 14-16oz block, extra or super-firm
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt + pepper to taste
  • 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup parmesan cheese, grated, plus more for serving
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes (optional, for a kick)
  • ¼ teaspoon oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon thyme
  • ⅓ cup sun-dried tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh herbs, chopped (such as basil or parsley, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Begin by preparing the tofu. Cut the block into three even pieces lengthwise. To achieve a chicken-like appearance, lay each piece flat and carefully trim off the top right and bottom left corners, rounding them slightly. This will give them the rough shape of a chicken breast. For best marinade absorption and presentation, make shallow diagonal cuts (about ¼ inch deep) on both sides of each tofu piece.
  2. Prepare the marinade by whisking together the 2 tablespoons of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, water, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper in a shallow dish. Add the prepared tofu pieces to the marinade, ensuring they are thoroughly coated. Allow the tofu to marinate for a minimum of 30 minutes, or for enhanced flavor, let it marinate in the refrigerator overnight.
  3. When you’re ready to cook, heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat and add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil. Remove the tofu from the marinade, allowing any excess liquid to drip off. Dip each marinated tofu piece into the all-purpose flour, ensuring it is fully covered in a thin, even layer.
  4. Place the floured tofu in a single layer in the hot skillet. Cook for approximately 5 minutes on each side, or until the exterior is beautifully golden brown and lightly crispy. Monitor closely to prevent burning. Once seared, carefully remove the tofu from the pan and set it aside on a plate.
  5. In the same skillet, melt the unsalted butter. Add the finely minced garlic and sauté for about 2 minutes, until it becomes wonderfully fragrant. Pour in the vegetable broth, scraping the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon to deglaze and incorporate any flavorful browned bits. Reduce the heat to medium-low, then stir in the heavy cream and grated Parmesan cheese. Allow the sauce to come to a gentle simmer for about 3 minutes, then season with chili flakes (if using), thyme, and oregano.
  6. Adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper to your personal taste. Stir in the chopped sun-dried tomatoes. Gently return the seared tofu pieces to the skillet, nestling them into the rich, creamy sauce. Let the sauce continue to simmer and thicken around the tofu for a few more minutes, ensuring the tofu is heated through and thoroughly coated. Serve immediately, either on its own, with pasta, or rice. Garnish with a sprinkle of fresh herbs such as basil or parsley for a bright finish.

Notes

TO MAKE IT VEGAN: For a completely vegan version, swap the heavy cream for an equal amount of full-fat coconut milk or a thick plant-based cream (such as cashew or oat-based cream). For the Parmesan cheese, I highly recommend using a high-quality vegan alternative, like Violife’s vegan Parmesan, which grates beautifully and melts well into the sauce.
