Nourishing New Moms: Healthy Cinnamon Raisin Lactation Muffins
Our first incredible guest post comes from the lovely Mary from Minutes Per Mile. Mary isn’t just a phenomenal blogger; she’s also a new mom herself, perfectly understanding the unique needs and challenges that come with this beautiful phase of life. She’s here to share a recipe that’s not only delicious but also incredibly timely and supportive for breastfeeding mothers: her Healthy Cinnamon Raisin Lactation Muffins!
The Unspoken Hunger: Fueling Your Breastfeeding Journey
Hello, B. Britnell readers! I’m absolutely thrilled to be featured on Brita’s blog and hope you find my contribution as enjoyable and helpful as you do hers. As a fellow new mom and blogger, I intimately understand how challenging it can be to carve out time for anything, let alone crafting a blog post. So, I’m delighted to step in for Brita as she’s undoubtedly soaking up those precious newborn snuggles and, hopefully, catching up on some much-needed sleep!
Everyone talks about how ravenous newborns are, but very few people truly prepare you for the intense hunger you’ll experience as a breastfeeding mother. When my daughter arrived six months ago, I felt like I was eating around the clock! It’s a hunger unlike any other, driven by the incredible demands of producing milk for your little one. Finding nutritious, easy-to-grab snacks became essential for my energy levels and overall well-being.
Demystifying Lactation-Boosting Ingredients (Galactagogues)
During those early weeks, a friend introduced me to the concept of “lactation foods” – ingredients thought to naturally help increase milk supply. These foods, often referred to as galactagogues, include items like brewer’s yeast, oatmeal, flaxseed, and even coconut. What makes these ingredients particularly appealing is how perfectly they lend themselves to baking, making them a delicious and convenient way to support lactation.
Brewer’s Yeast: A Nutritional Powerhouse
Brewer’s yeast is often touted as one of the most effective galactagogues. It’s rich in B vitamins, iron, protein, and chromium, which are all beneficial for new mothers. While scientific research specifically on brewer’s yeast for milk supply is limited, anecdotal evidence from countless breastfeeding moms suggests it can be a significant aid. Beyond milk production, its nutritional profile can also help combat fatigue, a common companion for new parents.
Oatmeal: Your Fiber-Rich Ally
Oatmeal is another widely recognized lactation food. It’s a whole grain packed with iron, fiber, and various vitamins and minerals. Some theories suggest that the saponins in oats may stimulate the pituitary gland to produce more prolactin, the hormone responsible for milk production. More practically, oats provide sustained energy, help regulate blood sugar, and offer a feeling of fullness – all crucial for a busy, hungry mom. Plus, it’s incredibly versatile and easy to incorporate into daily meals, not just muffins!
Flaxseed: Omega-3s and More
Ground flaxseed is a fantastic addition to lactation recipes. It’s an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are vital for your baby’s brain development and can also be beneficial for the mother’s mood and cognitive function. Flaxseed is also rich in phytoestrogens, plant compounds that some believe can have a positive effect on milk supply, similar to how estrogen levels can influence breast milk production. Its high fiber content also aids in digestion, which can be a relief during the postpartum period.
Coconut Oil: Healthy Fats for Energy
Coconut oil contributes healthy medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) that provide a readily available source of energy for new mothers. Breastfeeding requires a significant amount of caloric intake, and healthy fats like those in coconut oil can help meet these demands. While not a direct galactagogue in the same way as brewer’s yeast or oats, it offers essential nutrients and makes baked goods incredibly moist and satisfying.
I must admit, I don’t know if these foods have been officially and scientifically proven to increase milk production in rigorous studies. However, I decided to wholeheartedly believe the anecdotal evidence and treat it as a fantastic excuse to enjoy more delicious baked goods! And, anecdotally, I can confidently tell you that since I started incorporating a lactation muffin a day into my routine, I haven’t experienced any milk supply issues. It’s a delightful win-win situation!
Introducing: Healthy Cinnamon Raisin Lactation Muffins
The beauty of these lactation-boosting ingredients is their versatility. You can sneak brewer’s yeast, coconut oil, flaxseed, and oatmeal into almost any muffin, cookie, or cake recipe you adore. My current favorite, and the recipe I’m excited to share today, is for these wholesome and utterly delicious Cinnamon Raisin Lactation Muffins. I adapted this recipe from a fantastic Kitchn recipe, tweaking it to incorporate our special lactation ingredients. In addition to these fantastic breastfeeding aids, I use whole wheat flour and just a touch of brown sugar, making these treats genuinely healthy and satisfying.
Efficiency in the Kitchen: Mary’s “Dump and Go” Method
A little side note about my approach to cooking and baking, especially now as a marathon training enthusiast and new mom: my blog, Minutes Per Mile, is mostly about running and quick, efficient ways to live well. When it comes to exercise, eating, and even blogging, I’m all about speed and simplicity. This philosophy extends directly to my kitchen. That’s why I highly recommend skipping the traditional, multi-step baking methods.
Forget the time-consuming process of beating butter and sugar separately, then adding vanilla, then an egg, and then mixing dry ingredients in another bowl, only to combine everything later. As a new mom, nobody has time for that! We need delicious, nutritious food without the fuss.
My method? Dump everything into the mixer at once and just go for it! Seriously. This “dump and mix” approach ensures you can whip up these incredible lactation muffins in minutes, leaving you more time for what truly matters – whether that’s newborn snuggles, a quick run, or simply a moment of peace. It’s about maximizing your efficiency without compromising on taste or health benefits.
Once your batter is perfectly combined (without overmixing!), it’s time to pour it into your prepared muffin tin. This recipe is designed to be as straightforward as possible, so don’t fret over perfection – just get that delicious batter into the cups!
Optional Sweet Treat: The Cinnamon Crumble Topping
As I mentioned, this recipe is all about efficiency and speed. So, feel absolutely free to pop these babies into the oven right after you’ve filled your tin. They will be wonderfully delicious just as they are. BUT, if you happen to catch a lucky break – perhaps naptime extends a little longer than expected, or you find a few unexpected spare minutes – I highly recommend taking a moment to create a sweet cinnamon crumble topping. It’s a simple mix of butter, sugar, flour, and cinnamon, and it adds that extra layer of texture and pizzazz that elevates these muffins from great to absolutely irresistible.
Bake for just 10-13 minutes, and boom! You’ll have a batch of warm, fragrant, and nourishing muffins ready to enjoy. Take a bite and let these muffins make your belly, your boobs, and your baby happy. They’re a simple way to take care of yourself while you’re busy taking care of your little one.
The Ultimate Healthy Cinnamon Raisin Lactation Muffins Recipe
By Brita Britnell (Guest Post by Mary from Minutes Per Mile)

Ingredients for the Muffins:
- 1.5 cups whole wheat flour (I prefer King Arthur brand)
- 1.5 cups rolled oats
- ⅓ cup brown sugar
- ⅔ cup coconut oil
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 1.5 cups milk (any kind: dairy, almond, soy, etc.)
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1.5 tablespoons brewer’s yeast
- 1.5 tablespoons ground flaxseed
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- ¾ cup raisins
- 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional, or substitute with pecans, sunflower seeds, or chocolate chips)
Ingredients for the Optional Cinnamon Crumble Topping:
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Prepare a standard 12-cup muffin tin by greasing it with butter or lining it with paper liners.
- In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, combine all the muffin ingredients: whole wheat flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, coconut oil, softened butter, eggs, milk, vanilla extract, brewer’s yeast, ground flaxseed, baking powder, salt, ground cinnamon, raisins, and chopped walnuts (if using). Beat on medium speed until the ingredients are just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can result in tough muffins.
- If you choose to make the optional cinnamon crumble topping: In a small, separate bowl, combine the brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Add the cold, cut-up butter and use a pastry blender or your fingertips to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Divide the muffin batter evenly among the prepared muffin cups. If you prepared the crumble topping, sprinkle it generously over the top of each muffin.
- Bake for 10-13 minutes, or until the muffins are golden brown on top and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Remove the muffins from the oven and allow them to cool in the tin for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. These muffins are delicious warm or at room temperature.
Tips for Success & Variations
Storage Suggestions
These healthy cinnamon raisin lactation muffins are fantastic for meal prepping. Once completely cooled, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to a week. For longer storage, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. Simply thaw them at room temperature or warm them gently in the microwave or oven for a quick, comforting snack.
Customizing Your Muffins
While the cinnamon raisin combination is a classic and a personal favorite, feel free to customize these muffins to your liking. Here are a few ideas:
- Chocolate Chip Lovers: Replace the raisins with ¾ cup of dark chocolate chips for a rich, comforting treat.
- Berry Blast: Fold in 1 cup of fresh or frozen berries (blueberries, raspberries, or mixed berries) for a fruity twist.
- Nutty Crunch: Experiment with different nuts like chopped pecans or slivered almonds instead of walnuts, or add a mix of seeds like chia or sunflower for extra nutrients and texture.
- Spice It Up: Enhance the warm flavor profile by adding a pinch of nutmeg, ginger, or allspice along with the cinnamon.
- Sweetness Adjustment: If you prefer your muffins less sweet, you can slightly reduce the amount of brown sugar, especially if you’re using very sweet additions like dried cranberries.
Embracing the Journey
