Welcome back to my monthly traffic and income report! This marks my fourth consecutive report, and I’m incredibly proud of the consistency and transparency I’ve maintained in sharing this journey with you. These reports aren’t just a record of my blog’s performance; they’ve become a powerful tool for self-reflection, goal setting, and most importantly, connecting with an amazing community of fellow bloggers.

For those new to these insights, allow me to provide a brief overview. I initiated these monthly reports in January of this year with a clear objective: to meticulously document my blog’s income, expenses, and traffic metrics each month. Beyond the numbers, these reports serve as a platform to highlight a specific focus area or new strategy I’ve implemented, followed by a detailed account of my findings and results. This systematic approach has proven immensely beneficial, providing me with invaluable insights into my blog’s mechanics and fostering a sense of accountability. Furthermore, the reports have serendipitously facilitated connections with numerous other bloggers, an aspect of this journey that I absolutely cherish.

April was a month where I intentionally shifted gears and embraced a more relaxed pace. March had been exceptionally demanding, marked by intensive blogging efforts and a concerted push to finalize my much-anticipated Smoothies Ebook. Following its successful launch in early April (you can explore it HERE!), I made a conscious decision to step back slightly. My focus for April narrowed to two core areas: consistently creating high-quality, engaging content and developing innovative recipes that resonate with my audience. This period of strategic rest also allowed me ample time for ideation, leading to a wealth of exciting new concepts and blog series that I’m eager to introduce to the blog in the coming months. Get ready for some thrilling developments!

Now, let’s delve into the detailed report!

The Traffic Report: Analyzing Monthly Performance and Growth Strategies

Traffic Overview: Holding Steady and Aiming Higher

A notable observation regarding my traffic for April is the consistent performance of my pageviews, which have comfortably held steady within the 60,000 range. While I acknowledge that my ambitious goal is to reach 100,000 pageviews by the end of summer (which I typically define as September 1st), this current plateau can be a source of frustration. However, it’s also crucial to maintain perspective and gratitude. I’ve engaged with numerous fellow bloggers who are currently experiencing a downturn in their traffic numbers. In this context, maintaining a stable 60k pageviews is not just an achievement but a testament to the resilience and growing appeal of my content.

As has been the pattern in previous months, April saw a particularly strong spike in traffic. This surge was directly attributable to one of my recipes being featured in a highly popular Buzzfeed article. These features are invaluable for exposure, introducing my brand and recipes to a vast, new audience. My strategic hope, especially following the recent launch of my new ebook, is to effectively capture a significant portion of these new visitors. By offering them exceptional content and a compelling reason to return, I aim to convert them into loyal readers who will eagerly explore more of my diverse recipe collection in the future. This is a critical step in transforming transient visitors into a sustained, engaged community.

New vs. Returning Visitors: Cultivating Loyalty and Engagement

As I outlined in my January report, a key strategic goal for this blog has been to consistently increase my returning visitor percentage, aiming for a steady 30%. I am absolutely thrilled to report significant progress this month, with my returning visitors rising by approximately 4%! This growth, while seemingly modest in percentage, represents a substantial increase in reader loyalty and engagement, which is something I am incredibly proud of. To every single one of you who continually comes back to Food With Feeling, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks. Your consistent support and readership mean more to me than words can express. It validates the effort I put into creating content and fuels my passion to keep delivering delicious recipes and helpful insights. Cultivating a loyal audience is paramount for any blog, as returning visitors are more likely to engage with content, share posts, and ultimately contribute to the long-term success and community spirit of the site.

Top Ten Traffic Sources: Optimizing for Diverse Reach

When examining my traffic sources for April, I am absolutely delighted to see the strong performance of my top five channels. This is a direct reflection of concerted efforts in various optimization strategies. One particularly gratifying outcome is the prominent position of organic Google traffic, securing the #2 spot. This significant ranking underscores the success of my ongoing dedication to SEO optimization, which includes meticulous keyword research, creating high-quality, relevant content, and ensuring a technically sound website structure. Seeing these efforts translate into tangible search engine visibility is incredibly rewarding and reaffirms the importance of a robust SEO strategy for sustainable blog growth.

A special shoutout is due to Amanda from Recipes Worth Repeating, who consistently includes my recipes in her incredibly popular Buzzfeed roundups. Each time one of my recipes is featured in a Buzzfeed roundup, I observe a remarkable and immediate spike in traffic. These features are invaluable for exposing my content to a broader audience and driving significant visitor engagement. This consistent positive outcome serves as a powerful reminder and motivator: I should actively pursue creating more of my own Buzzfeed articles. By proactively generating content for such influential platforms, I can amplify my reach and drive even more targeted traffic back to my blog. Furthermore, I’ve been strategically focusing on enhancing my presence and engagement on both Pinterest and Yummly. It’s incredibly satisfying to witness these deliberate efforts translate into increased traffic, validating the time and resources invested in optimizing these visual discovery platforms for food content.

The Income Report: A Transparent Look at Blog Monetization

Transparency is a cornerstone of these reports. Please note that some of the links provided below are affiliate links. This means if you make a purchase through them, I may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. I only ever list products and services that I personally use, genuinely love, and wholeheartedly recommend to my audience. Should you have any questions about any of these recommendations, please don’t hesitate to reach out via email.

  • Mediavine: $282.51
  • Freelance Writing: $400
  • Sponsored Post: $225
  • Food Blogger Pro: $5.80
This income stream is generated from a dedicated post I authored, encouraging fellow bloggers to discover the immense value and sign up for Food Blogger Pro’s comprehensive resources.
  • Food Photography School: $0
While no income was generated this month, this affiliate potential stems from a valuable post I created, offering essential tips and tricks for aspiring food photographers.
  • Greater Than Gatsby: $56.40
This revenue is consistently earned through several informative posts where I demonstrate how I achieve stunning photo edits using Greater Than Gatsby Actions & Presets, highlighting their effectiveness.
  • Amazon Associates: $3.25
This represents income derived from various Amazon affiliate links strategically placed throughout my blog posts, recommending kitchen tools, ingredients, and other relevant products that enhance the cooking experience.

*It’s important to clarify that this income report specifically pertains to my blog’s earnings and does not include any revenue generated from my separate food photography business.

Total Income: $972.96

I must take a moment to express my absolute satisfaction with the decision I made earlier this year to switch to Mediavine for my blog’s ad management. Their platform and team have been nothing short of exceptional to work with. The transition was seamless, as they expertly handled all the technical setup, relieving me of a significant burden. Their user-friendly dashboard is a particular highlight, providing me with precise control over the ads displayed on my site. I can easily opt-in or opt-out of specific ad categories or placements if they don’t align with my brand aesthetics or user experience preferences, ensuring my site maintains a clean and professional look.

Shortly after I joined Mediavine, they implemented a new minimum pageview requirement for new applicants, which I believe is now around 30,000 pageviews per month. Regardless of the exact threshold, my strong recommendation to any growing blogger is to join a reputable ad network like Mediavine or Adthrive as soon as your traffic qualifies. Delegating ad management to professionals has been an immense relief, allowing me to fully concentrate on content creation and audience engagement, rather than grappling with the complexities of ad optimization. The passive income generated, coupled with their excellent support, makes it an invaluable partnership for monetizing a blog effectively.

Expenses: Investing in Blog Growth and Quality

Running a successful blog involves strategic investments in tools and services that enhance its functionality, content quality, and reach. Here’s a breakdown of my blog-related expenses for April, reflecting my commitment to continuous improvement:

  • WP Engine Hosting: $75
Reliable and fast hosting is non-negotiable for a food blog with high-resolution images and increasing traffic. WP Engine provides robust, secure, and incredibly fast hosting, which is crucial for SEO and user experience. Their managed WordPress platform ensures my site runs smoothly and efficiently.
  • Food: $138.93
This expense is meticulously tracked and specifically allocated to ingredients purchased for recipes that are professionally photographed and published on the blog. I maintain a strict policy to only expense food directly utilized for blog content, excluding ingredients used solely for recipe testing or personal consumption. This ensures accurate financial reporting for blog-related activities.
  • Adobe Lightroom/ Photoshop: $10.91
These industry-standard tools are indispensable for editing and enhancing the high-quality food photography that is central to my blog’s appeal. Lightroom allows for efficient batch processing and subtle adjustments, while Photoshop is used for more complex image manipulation, ensuring every recipe looks as delicious as it tastes.
  • Props: $23.43
Investing in various props – such as unique plates, bowls, cutlery, and background surfaces – is essential for creating visually stunning food photography. These items help in styling food to tell a compelling story, elevate the aesthetic of my posts, and keep my visual content fresh and engaging for readers.
  • Mailchimp Premium: $15
An active and engaged email list is a powerful asset for any blogger. Mailchimp enables me to connect directly with my audience, sharing new recipes, exclusive content, and updates. The premium plan offers advanced features for segmentation, automation, and analytics, helping me nurture a loyal community.
  • Audio for recipe videos: $21
As I expand into creating more video content, particularly recipe tutorials, investing in quality audio equipment is crucial. Clear, crisp audio significantly enhances the viewer experience, making videos more professional and enjoyable. This expense reflects my commitment to producing high-quality multimedia content.
  • Optin Monster one time payment: $49
Optin Monster is a powerful lead generation tool that helps convert website visitors into email subscribers. Its various opt-in forms, pop-ups, and slide-ins are strategically designed to capture reader interest and grow my email list effectively, contributing to long-term audience engagement.

Total Expenses: $333.27

What I Focused on in April: Embracing Strategic Rest and Creative Planning

As I touched upon earlier, April was a deliberate departure from the intense pace of the preceding months. After three months of working incredibly hard and pushing boundaries with my blog, I made a conscious decision to utilize April as a “break” month. However, this wasn’t a complete cessation of work, but rather a strategic reallocation of my energy. Instead of chasing numbers or launching new initiatives, my primary focus was twofold: firstly, to channel my efforts into creating truly exceptional, high-quality content that resonates deeply with my audience; and secondly, to dedicate ample time to brainstorming and formulating innovative ideas for future posts and blog series.

This period of strategic rest was crucial for avoiding burnout and fostering genuine creativity. It allowed me to step back, re-evaluate my overall blog strategy, and design compelling concepts without the pressure of daily deadlines. Therefore, while there isn’t a specific “project completed” to report this month, the seeds for significant future growth and exciting new content have been sown. I encourage you to stay tuned over the next couple of months, as I’m thrilled to unveil some brand-new blog series and engaging content that I believe you’re going to love!

Focus for the Next 30 Days: Amplifying Reach and Revenue

Looking ahead, my strategic priorities for the upcoming 30 days are clearly defined and centered around two pivotal areas: supercharging my affiliate marketing efforts and significantly enhancing my social media presence. These two pillars are essential for both immediate revenue growth and long-term audience expansion.

Affiliate Marketing: Seamless Integration for Authentic Recommendations

Last week, I serendipitously stumbled upon an insightful post from a fellow blogger that discussed numerous affiliate companies offering free products. While receiving free products is undoubtedly a perk, my ultimate goal for affiliate marketing extends beyond just samples; it’s about generating sustainable income to support the blog. (And to be clear, this observation is not a critique of the article itself, which is actually a fantastic resource for discovering potential partnerships!) However, that initial discovery spurred me into a deeper dive into affiliate research. Through extensive exploration on platforms like Share-A-Sale, I’ve identified several truly exceptional companies whose products and services I already genuinely use, love, and recommend. Crucially, these companies also boast robust affiliate programs.

My core challenge and focus for the next few weeks is to devise a strategy to seamlessly integrate these affiliate partnerships into my blog content. The objective is to recommend products authentically, without appearing overly pushy or solely driven by sales. This involves creating valuable content around these products, showcasing their benefits, and ensuring that any affiliate links feel like a natural, helpful extension of my advice rather than an interruption. I’m aiming to implement some of these new strategies over the coming weeks, and I’ll be sure to provide a detailed update on their performance and my findings in next month’s report.

Social Media: Intentional Growth and Engagement Across Platforms

For perhaps the first time in my blogging journey, I feel genuinely confident and happy with the quality and direction of the content I’m creating. This newfound assurance provides the perfect foundation to now intensely focus on strategically growing my social media platforms and developing a more intentional, organized approach to managing my presence across them. Specifically, I’m dedicating significant effort to these key networks:

Instagram: Historically, my Instagram activity has been fairly minimal, typically consisting of one post per day. However, I’m committed to significantly stepping up my game. My current strategy involves increasing my posting frequency to approximately twice a day. This includes not only new content but also strategically re-sharing high-performing older pictures and posts from my archives, giving them new life and reach. Beyond just posting, I’m making a concerted effort to actively engage with the Instagram community. This means dedicating time to liking, commenting on, and following more accounts within similar foodie niches. This genuine interaction isn’t just about growth; it’s about building meaningful connections. In just the five days I’ve been actively pursuing this strategy, I’ve already observed my follower count growing by about 10 people daily, which is incredibly encouraging and makes the process truly enjoyable.

Pinterest: As many of you will recall from my income report in January, I’ve been heavily focused on expanding my Pinterest presence. This dedication has paid off, as I’m now just a few followers shy of reaching 4,000, making it my largest following across all my social platforms. While I’ve slightly adjusted my intense focus, I remain steadfastly committed to consistent posting. My daily goal is to publish at least one pin to each of my relevant boards. Crucially, I’m also ensuring that I regularly post my own recipes to various group boards, leveraging their collective reach. To manage this efficiently and avoid overlooking any opportunities, I’ve developed a rather elaborate spreadsheet system to meticulously track all my Pinterest activities.

A recent conversation with Trevor from The Blog Village highlighted that it was well past time for me to integrate a Pinterest scheduling tool. Acting on his invaluable advice, I subscribed to Tailwind last week, and I’m commencing the scheduling process today. My plan is to dedicate a couple of hours once a week to strategically schedule all my pins for the upcoming seven days. This proactive approach will ensure consistent visibility and free up daily time. I’ll be sure to report back next month on how this new scheduling strategy is impacting my Pinterest growth and efficiency.

Facebook: Mirroring my Pinterest strategy, my primary objective for Facebook is to streamline content distribution. My goal is to sit down just once a week and schedule all my posts for the entire upcoming seven-day period. Fortunately, Facebook’s native scheduling feature is incredibly intuitive and user-friendly, leaving me with absolutely no excuses not to maintain a consistent presence. My general posting strategy aims for 3-4 updates per day, encompassing a diverse mix of content: 1) an engaging older post from my archives to give it renewed visibility, 2) any new content or recipes I’ve published that day, and 3 & 4) curated recipes and valuable content from other respected bloggers in my niche. While I haven’t observed a dramatic increase in my follower count through this method, I have noticed a significant and gratifying boost in audience engagement – a metric I value highly as it indicates a more connected and interactive community.

Thanks to YOU: Blogging for a Cause and Giving Back

The journey of building this blog has been incredibly rewarding, not just personally, but also in its capacity to create a tangible positive impact beyond the digital realm. It is thanks to each and every one of you who visits, reads, and engages with my blog that I have been able to continue a deeply meaningful commitment: sponsoring a young girl in Haiti this month. And I plan to continue this sponsorship for many months to come, a testament to the sustainable growth we’re achieving together.

My unwavering plan is to consistently donate 10% of all income generated directly from my blog. This commitment serves as a powerful reminder of the broader purpose behind my work and the community we’ve collectively built. I am profoundly grateful for this opportunity to give back, even if for now it’s a small contribution. Every pageview, every comment, and every share contributes to making a real difference in a young life, and that, to me, is the ultimate measure of success for Food With Feeling.
