The Blended Baked Oats Phenomenon: A TikTok Sensation

Have you been scrolling through social media lately and noticed the widespread popularity of #BakedOats? Like many culinary sensations, this trend exploded on TikTok, captivating millions with its simplicity and irresistible appeal. However, this isn’t your grandmother’s traditional baked oatmeal, where oats are simply mixed with liquid and other ingredients and then baked. This innovative approach involves a crucial step: blending all the ingredients together before baking. This transforms the oats into a fine flour-like consistency, resulting in a dish that is more akin to a fluffy, moist cake than a bowl of porridge. It’s this unique cake-like texture that makes these blended baked oats truly revolutionary and a firm favorite for a delightful start to the day.

The initial videos showcasing these blended baked oats often lacked specific recipes, leaving viewers intrigued but without clear guidance. Inspired by the captivating visuals, I embarked on creating my own perfected version of this viral sensation. The result was an instant hit, garnering over 700,000 views in just 48 hours on TikTok, and sparking countless questions about the recipe details. Due to popular demand and the overwhelming love for this breakfast revelation, I developed two distinct versions, ensuring everyone can enjoy this delectable treat. Now, let’s dive into all the delicious details so you can create this amazing dish in your own kitchen!

Unveiling the Ingredients: Two Delicious Paths to Blended Baked Oats

To cater to various preferences and dietary needs, I developed two distinct versions of this irresistible baked oats recipe. One version is entirely vegan, closely inspired by my popular Oat Flour Muffins. The second version incorporates eggs, a frequent request from many eager bakers. After extensive testing and feedback from numerous enthusiasts, the banana-based vegan version consistently emerges as the fan favorite, praised for its incredible taste and texture.

Let’s explore the essential ingredients that make these blended baked oats so special, focusing on the beloved vegan version:

  • Old-fashioned oats: The foundation of this recipe. While many inquired about using different types of oats, my testing consistently yielded the best results with old-fashioned rolled oats. They blend smoothly to create the desired cake-like consistency. I strongly advise against using steel-cut oats, as their hard texture prevents proper blending. Quick oats might work but haven’t been thoroughly tested, so proceed with caution. For those with gluten sensitivities, ensure you opt for certified gluten-free oats.
  • Milk: The beauty of this recipe lies in its flexibility. Feel free to use your preferred milk, whether it’s dairy-free options like oat milk or almond milk, or traditional dairy milk such as 2%. All variations have been tested and work wonderfully, contributing to a rich, moist batter.
  • Maple syrup: This natural sweetener provides a delightful warmth and depth of flavor. Some expressed concerns about the amount, but at just 1/4 cup for the entire recipe (yielding 4 servings), it translates to only 50 calories per serving. This modest addition is well worth the balanced sweetness it imparts. If you prefer less sweetness or are watching your sugar intake, you can easily reduce the amount or omit it entirely. Other natural sweeteners like agave nectar or a sugar-free alternative can also be used.
  • Flavorings: A touch of vanilla extract and a hint of ground cinnamon are the secret to the warm, cozy, and inviting aroma and taste of these blended baked oats. While optional, these additions elevate the flavor profile significantly, making them feel like a true comfort food. Feel free to experiment with other spices like nutmeg or cardamom for a different twist.
  • Salt, baking powder, and baking soda: These leavening agents are crucial for achieving that desirable fluffy, airy texture. They work in harmony to help the blended oats rise beautifully during baking, contributing to the cake-like lightness we all crave.
  • Banana: In the vegan version, one large, ripe banana serves as the perfect binder, replacing eggs to hold all the ingredients together. Beyond its structural role, it contributes a wonderful natural sweetness and imparts a subtle, delicious flavor reminiscent of homemade banana bread. The riper the banana, the sweeter and more prominent the flavor will be.
  • Nut or seed butter: Adding a spoonful of nut butter (like almond or peanut butter) or seed butter (like sunflower seed butter) introduces a delightful richness and nutty flavor that complements the oats beautifully. It also adds a boost of healthy fats. If you have allergies or prefer to keep it lighter, this ingredient can be omitted without compromising the core integrity of the recipe.

Effortless Preparation: A Step-by-Step Guide to Blended Baked Oats

Making either version of this blended baked oats recipe is remarkably straightforward, requiring minimal effort for maximum deliciousness. Here’s a quick overview of the simple process. For precise measurements and detailed instructions for both the vegan and egg versions, refer to the comprehensive recipe card below:

  1. Prepare your baking dish: Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). While the oven heats up, lightly grease a small casserole dish. My preferred size is 6×8 inches, but any similar-sized baking vessel will work, such as a 9×5-inch bread loaf pan or an 8×8-inch brownie pan. Keep in mind that baking times may vary slightly depending on the exact dimensions and depth of your chosen dish.
  2. Blend the batter: Gather all your ingredients (except any desired mix-ins like blueberries, chocolate chips, or nuts) and add them directly into a blender. Blend until the mixture is completely creamy and smooth, with little to no visible chunks of oats remaining. The goal is a uniform, thick batter. Once blended, gently fold in any berries, chocolate chips, or other desired mix-ins.
  3. Bake to perfection: Pour the smooth batter into your prepared and greased baking dish. If you wish, sprinkle additional mix-ins on top for extra visual appeal and flavor. Bake for 20-25 minutes. In my oven, 25 minutes consistently yields a perfect result. You’ll know it’s ready when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, indicating a fully cooked and wonderfully moist interior.

A Symphony of Flavors and Textures: What to Expect

The culinary experience of these blended baked oats largely depends on which version you choose to create. Both are undeniably delicious, but they offer distinct profiles:

In my personal opinion, the vegan version, made with ripe banana, stands out as the superior choice. It boasts a texture that is wonderfully soft, moist, and strikingly similar to a tender cake – just a touch softer, as you might expect from an oatmeal-based dish. It achieves a perfect balance of sweetness and rich flavor, making it an all-around incredible and satisfying breakfast or snack.

The egg version, while also very palatable, tends to be denser and possesses a slightly more sponge-like consistency. It typically rises a bit higher during baking compared to its vegan counterpart, offering a different but equally enjoyable experience. Ultimately, the choice between the two comes down to your preferred texture and dietary considerations.

Unleash Your Creativity: Customizing Your Blended Baked Oats

One of the most exciting aspects of this blended baked oats recipe is its incredible versatility. It serves as a blank canvas, eagerly awaiting your favorite flavors and creative additions. The possibilities are virtually endless, allowing you to tailor each batch to your mood or craving. Which delightful variation will you try first?

  • Fresh and fruity: Incorporate about 1/2 cup of your favorite fruits into the batter. Blueberries are a classic choice, but chopped apples, diced pears, sweet peaches, or vibrant strawberries all make fantastic additions, infusing natural sweetness and a burst of freshness.
  • Spice it up: Beyond the comforting notes of cinnamon, explore other warm spices to elevate your oats. Try a pinch of nutmeg, a dash of allspice, or blends like apple pie spice or pumpkin pie spice for a seasonal touch.
  • Exciting mix-ins: Get creative with your mix-ins! In addition to, or instead of fruit, stir in a handful of toasted shredded coconut for a tropical vibe, chocolate chips for a rich indulgence, or chopped nuts (like walnuts or pecans) for added crunch and healthy fats.
  • Luscious toppings: Once your baked oats emerge from the oven, elevate them with delectable toppings. A delicate drizzle of extra maple syrup, a generous dollop of creamy almond butter or peanut butter, a scoop of cooling yogurt, or a cloud of whipped cream can transform this breakfast into an unforgettable dessert-like experience.

Serving Suggestions for a Complete Meal

These blended baked oats are incredibly satisfying on their own, providing a wholesome and fulfilling meal. However, they also pair beautifully with a variety of breakfast sides, allowing you to create a more comprehensive and balanced spread. Consider these excellent options:

  • Crispy hash browns or savory breakfast potatoes for a hearty contrast.
  • A refreshing bowl of fresh fruit or a vibrant fruit salad to add vitamins and lightness.
  • Creamy yogurt, Greek or regular, for an extra boost of protein and a cool counterpoint.
  • Savory breakfast meats like crispy bacon, juicy sausage, or tender ham for added protein.
  • Perfectly cooked eggs (scrambled, fried, or poached) to complete a traditional breakfast feast.

  • 3 tablespoons nut butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • ½ tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • pinch salt
  • optional: 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon OR 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder for the double choc version
  • ½ cup of optional mix-ins such as berries, chocolate chips, etc

For the egg version:

  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • ½ cup milk, dairy free works
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • pinch salt
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

For both versions:

  • Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 C) and generously grease a small casserole dish. While a 6×8 inch dish is ideal, a 9×5 inch bread loaf pan or an 8×8 inch brownie pan will also work well. Adjust baking time as needed for different pan sizes.
