Internet, prepare for Jemma Jacqueline

Welcome to the World, Jemma Jacqueline: Our Journey into Parenthood

The past two weeks have been an absolute whirlwind of love, discovery, and profound joy. We are thrilled beyond measure to finally introduce the newest, most precious member of the Britnell family to the world. Internet, please meet our beautiful daughter, Jemma Jacqueline!

This special post is dedicated to celebrating her arrival and sharing a glimpse into our incredible journey into parenthood. We’re deeply grateful to Britnell Photography and LRA Photography for capturing so many of these cherished early moments. These images truly freeze time and we will hold them close to our hearts forever.

Jemma’s Grand Entrance: A Birth Story Filled with Love

Jemma Jacqueline graced us with her presence at 1:48 AM on August 12th. While technically a day past her official due date, in my heart, she arrived precisely when she was meant to. Based on my own calculations, tracking my cycle, she was right on schedule. It’s a fun little anecdote to share, giving her an extra layer of punctuality that makes her arrival feel even more perfect.

My pregnancy journey had been marked by a strong desire for a natural birth experience. I spent countless hours researching, preparing, and mentally conditioning myself for what I envisioned as an unmedicated delivery. However, as any seasoned parent knows, birth plans often have a way of diverging from reality.

When labor began, it presented itself with intense back labor – a sensation far more challenging than I had anticipated. The pain was relentless, making it difficult to find comfort or truly relax into the process. After hours of navigating this intense experience, I made the decision to get an epidural. And let me tell you, it was nothing short of miraculous! The relief was immediate and allowed me to finally rest and gather strength for the final stage.

When the time came to push, Jemma entered the world with astonishing speed, arriving in less than ten minutes. It was an incredibly powerful and emotional moment. Looking back, despite the unexpected turn with the epidural, I feel immensely grateful for a positive birth experience. I attribute much of this to the unwavering support of Mr. Britnell, who was my rock throughout, and to our wonderful doula, whose guidance and encouragement were invaluable. Their presence truly made all the difference.

Our Perfect Little Human: First Glimpses and Overwhelming Love

From the moment she arrived, Jemma captivated us completely. She inherited my thick, dark hair, a trait I adore, and Mr. Britnell’s beautiful blue eyes. She is, quite simply, perfect in every single way. The depth of love we felt instantly was indescribable, a profound connection that shifted our world’s axis.

It’s absolutely true what seasoned parents tell you: you can spend hours just gazing at your baby and never tire of it. Every tiny breath, every delicate movement, every subtle facial expression is a masterpiece. It feels so fundamental, yet so utterly miraculous, that I played a part in growing something so intricate and flawless. All the beautiful, seemingly cliché things parents say about their newborns? They are all true, and I am experiencing every single one of them right now. The wonder of creation, the boundless love, the surreal feeling of holding your world in your arms – it’s all here, consuming our every moment.

Cherished Moments: Our Favorite Things About Jemma’s First Weeks

In these early weeks, Jemma has already filled our lives with so many precious moments and quirks that we’ve come to adore. Here are just a few of our favorite things about our little girl:

  • **Her sweet sounds:** The delicate little noises and grunts she makes, especially when she’s deep in sleep, are the most comforting lullabies.
  • **The hand-finding mission:** Watching her desperately search for her tiny hands with her mouth, a primal instinct in action, is endlessly endearing.
  • **The triumphant suck:** The sheer adorableness of her face when she finally finds her hands and sucks on them with all her might, as if her entire life depends on it.
  • **Her focused gaze:** The way she stares at me, with such intensity, making me feel like I am the only person in her whole world. It’s a connection unlike any other.
  • **The magic of breastfeeding:** Every aspect of it, even those middle-of-the-night sessions when exhaustion is creeping in, feels profoundly special and bonding.
  • **Tiny hands, big grip:** The precious moment when Jemma holds onto my finger with her minuscule hand while she’s feeding, a gentle affirmation of her presence.
  • **Mr. Britnell as a Dad:** Witnessing the deep affection and joy Mr. Britnell finds in holding her, and indeed, every interaction between the two of them, fills my heart.
  • **Her fleeting smiles:** Each tiny smile, even if it’s just an involuntary muscle movement, feels like a burst of sunshine in our day.
  • **Her surprisingly loud bodily functions:** Yes, I admit it – there’s an endearingly hilarious quality to her loud farts and poops. (Perhaps I still have the humor of an eight-year-old child, but it adds a certain levity to our daily life!)
  • **The wonder of creation:** Every time I remember that I brought this tiny, perfect human into the world, I’m filled with awe and gratitude.
  • **Future dreams:** The endless conversations with Mr. Britnell about all the places we want to take her, the adventures we’ll embark on, and the myriad of things we can’t wait to teach her.
  • **In essence, everything:** Truly, there isn’t a single thing about her that we don’t absolutely love.

Settling into Our New Norm: Home, Hounds, and Happiness

Mr. Britnell has truly embraced his role as a new father, quickly becoming a master swaddler – often achieving a much neater wrap than I can! I’m perfectly content with his newfound skill; it’s just another sweet way he cares for our little girl.

One of my primary goals after Jemma’s birth was to get home as quickly as possible. After politely, yet persistently, bugging my doctor and the hospital staff, we managed to convince them to allow us to be discharged the day after she was born. There was an inexplicable urgency to leave the hospital environment. It was a blend of two strong desires: first, the conviction that there was no need to stay in a hospital setting longer than absolutely necessary, and second, an overwhelming impatience to bring Jemma home, introduce her to our beloved dogs, and truly settle into our new rhythm as a family of three – not forgetting our expanded furry and feathered family members (puppies, a kitten, and chicks!).

The initial introduction between Jemma and our dogs was quite interesting! For the first few days, they were incredibly curious, rushing over almost every time she made even the slightest noise. Now, however, their initial fascination has mellowed into a kind of gentle indifference. Since she’s not yet offering treats or petting them, she’s currently perceived as “good for nothing” in the eyes of a giant fluffy dog! Nevertheless, I have absolutely no doubt that a deep, mutual love will blossom between them soon enough. It will be heartwarming to watch their bond grow as Jemma gets older.

I’ve been cautiously warned not to mention this to any parents with young children, but we feel truly blessed. Jemma is not only a fantastic eater but also an incredibly good sleeper! We are doing our absolute best not to take this for granted, and we’re desperately hoping with all our might that she continues this wonderful trend. I find myself half-expecting her to transform into a crying monster at any given moment, just waiting for the other shoe to drop!

Our days are currently a blissful blur. We’re feasting on delicious food that we didn’t have to cook (a massive thank you to our incredible family and friends for that invaluable support!), spending countless hours simply staring at our new little baby, and… well, that pretty much sums it up. Oh, and diapers. So many diapers! How something so tiny can produce such an astonishing volume of poop and pee remains one of life’s great mysteries, one I may never fully comprehend.

Capturing Every Moment: My Photography Obsession

Just a few days before I went into labor, I made an impulse purchase of a new lens (THIS one, in case you’re curious about my new favorite toy!). Since then, it has barely left my camera body. I’ve been taking non-stop photos of Jemma – seriously, an exorbitant number of pictures! And I have absolutely zero regrets. She might as well get used to a camera being in her face, as it’s clearly going to be a constant presence throughout her life. Documenting every tiny change, every expression, and every milestone is something I’m incredibly passionate about.

Now, prepare yourself for an indulgent photo dump! These are a collection of random nursery shots and other delightful photos I’ve obsessively captured over Jemma’s first thirteen days. Each one tells a small story of her precious early moments and the love that surrounds her.

Embracing the Cuteness Overload

I sincerely hope you’re ready for an abundance of baby photo cuteness, because it’s going to be a frequent and much-loved feature around here from now on. Consider this your official warning! Our hearts are overflowing with happiness, and we can’t wait to share more of Jemma’s journey with you all.

Thank you for joining us in celebrating this incredible new chapter. Have a truly lovely weekend, friends!
