There’s nothing quite like the comforting aroma and delightful taste of freshly baked cinnamon rolls. These incredibly soft, perfectly spiced, and generously frosted **Vegan Cinnamon Rolls** bring all the classic joy you remember, but without any dairy or eggs. This recipe stands as a testament to how delicious and satisfying plant-based baking can be, making it an absolute must-try for everyone, whether you’re vegan or simply looking for a fantastic, homemade treat.
For years, I’ve refined this recipe, making countless batches, and each time, they turn out beautifully. They are easily one of the most beloved vegan breakfast recipes on the blog, and for good reason! What makes these truly exceptional is not just their incredible flavor and texture, but also the flexibility of preparing them as overnight cinnamon rolls. Imagine waking up to a warm, gooey breakfast with minimal morning effort – a truly blissful start to any day.

Why These Are The Best Vegan Cinnamon Rolls
I’ve experimented with numerous cinnamon roll recipes, both traditional and vegan, but these consistently emerge as the absolute best. They boast a tender, fluffy crumb that practically melts in your mouth, a rich, buttery cinnamon swirl, and a decadent frosting that ties it all together. The secret lies in balancing simplicity with precise techniques, ensuring that even novice bakers can achieve bakery-quality results at home.
The beauty of this recipe lies in its commitment to the classic cinnamon roll experience. I’ve ensured that the substitution of dairy and eggs doesn’t compromise on taste or texture. Instead of dairy milk, I typically opt for almond milk, though oat milk or light coconut milk also perform beautifully, lending their subtle creaminess to the dough. Traditional butter is replaced with high-quality vegan butter, which contributes to the rich flavor and tender crumb, while the eggs are simply omitted, allowing the yeast and careful ratios to do their magic.

Essential Ingredients for Perfect Plant-Based Cinnamon Rolls
Creating these delightful vegan cinnamon rolls involves a few key ingredients, each playing a crucial role in achieving that perfect taste and texture. Don’t be intimidated by the idea of vegan baking; most of these items are pantry staples or easily found at your local grocery store.
- Active Dry Yeast: This is the heart of your dough, responsible for its soft, airy rise. Ensure your yeast is fresh and active for the best results. A key step is proofing it in warm liquid to confirm its vitality.
- Plant-Based Milk: I prefer unsweetened almond milk for its neutral flavor, but oat milk offers a slightly creamier texture, and soy milk is another excellent option. For those who enjoy a subtle tropical note, light coconut milk can also work well. The critical factor is its temperature – around 110°F (43°C) is ideal for activating the yeast without killing it. I highly recommend using a kitchen thermometer to ensure accuracy.
- Vegan Butter: The quality of your vegan butter significantly impacts the flavor and texture of your rolls. Brands like Country Crock Plant Butter or Miyoko’s Kitchen Cultured Vegan Butter are excellent choices that mimic the richness of dairy butter beautifully. It’s used both in the dough and for the sumptuous filling.
- Organic Cane Sugar: While regular granulated sugar can be used, organic cane sugar lends a slightly richer, more nuanced sweetness to baked goods, enhancing the overall flavor profile of these rolls. It also helps activate the yeast.
- All-Purpose Flour: For the best texture, opt for a good quality unbleached all-purpose flour. While I haven’t specifically tested a gluten-free version of this recipe, a 1-to-1 gluten-free baking flour blend designed for yeast baking would be your best bet if you’re looking for a gluten-free alternative.
- Salt: A pinch of salt is essential to balance the sweetness and enhance the flavors, bringing out the best in both the dough and the filling.
For the Irresistible Filling:
- Brown Sugar: This provides a deeper, caramel-like sweetness compared to white sugar, which is quintessential for classic cinnamon rolls.
- Ground Cinnamon: Don’t skimp on good quality cinnamon! It’s the star of the show.
- Softened Vegan Butter: Essential for creating that gooey, melt-in-your-mouth filling. Make sure it’s soft enough to spread easily but not melted.
For the Luscious Frosting:
- Powdered Sugar: The base for a smooth, sweet glaze.
- Orange Juice and Zest (Optional but Recommended!): This is my secret ingredient! The bright, citrusy notes of fresh orange juice and zest elevate the frosting, cutting through the sweetness and adding a vibrant layer of flavor that complements the cinnamon beautifully. If you prefer a more traditional glaze, simply use a splash of plant-based milk instead of orange juice and omit the zest.

How to Bake the Best Vegan Cinnamon Rolls: Step-by-Step Guide
While these **homemade vegan cinnamon rolls** aren’t a “whip-them-up-in-a-jiffy” kind of recipe, the process is straightforward and incredibly rewarding. Patience is a virtue when working with yeast dough, and the result is well worth every minute.
Activating the Yeast & The First Rise:
- Warm the Milk Mixture: In a small saucepan, gently warm the plant-based milk, melted vegan butter, and sugar over low-medium heat. Stir frequently until the sugar dissolves and the mixture reaches about 110°F (43°C). It should feel pleasantly warm, like a hot bath, but not too hot to touch. If it gets too hot, let it cool down; excessively hot liquid will kill your yeast.
- Proof the Yeast: Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the warm milk mixture. Let it sit undisturbed for 5-10 minutes. This gives the yeast time to activate. You should see a foamy layer form on the surface, indicating the yeast is alive and ready to work. If there’s no foam, your yeast might be expired or the liquid too hot/cold, and your dough won’t rise properly.
- Prepare the Dough: Pour the yeast mixture into a large mixing bowl. Add 3 ½ cups of all-purpose flour and the salt. Using a wooden spoon or a stand mixer with a dough hook, mix until just combined. The dough will be shaggy at this stage.
- First Rise: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and place it in a warm, draft-free spot. Let the dough rise for about 1 hour, or until it has nearly doubled in size. This first rise develops flavor and creates that signature fluffy texture.

Shaping the Rolls & The Second Rise:
- Prepare Filling & Pan: While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon for the filling.
- Add Remaining Flour & Knead: Once the first rise is complete, add the remaining ½ cup of flour to the dough. Mix with your hands until just combined. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 3 minutes. The dough should be soft and pliable. If it’s too sticky, add flour one tablespoon at a time until it’s manageable.
- Roll Out the Dough: Using a rolling pin on your floured surface, roll the dough into a rectangle approximately 15 x 9 inches. Try to keep the edges as straight as possible for uniform rolls. Gently stretch the corners if needed to achieve an even shape.
- Spread Filling: Evenly spread the softened vegan butter over the entire surface of the dough, leaving a small ¼-inch margin around the edges. Then, generously sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture over the butter.
- Roll and Cut: Starting from one of the longer edges, tightly roll up the dough into a log. Once rolled, gently place the log seam-side down. Using a sharp knife or even unflavored dental floss, cut the log into 12 equal-sized pieces. Place these cut rolls into your prepared baking dish.
- Second Rise: Cover the dish again and let the rolls rise for another 30 minutes in a warm spot. This second rise is crucial for light and fluffy cinnamon rolls.
Baking and Frosting:
- Bake: Bake the cinnamon rolls in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until golden brown on top and cooked through. The exact time may vary slightly depending on your oven.
- Prepare Frosting: While the rolls are baking, whisk together the powdered sugar, orange juice (or plant milk), and orange zest (if using) in a small bowl until smooth and creamy. Adjust liquid as needed for desired consistency.
- Frost and Serve: As soon as the cinnamon rolls come out of the oven, generously spread the frosting over them. The warmth of the rolls will make the frosting melt slightly, creating a glorious glaze. Serve immediately and enjoy the irresistible goodness!

How to Make Overnight Vegan Cinnamon Rolls for Effortless Mornings
The **overnight method for vegan cinnamon rolls** is a game-changer for holidays, special occasions, or simply making your weekday mornings a little sweeter. This approach allows the flavors to meld and the dough to develop slowly, resulting in an even more tender and delicious roll with minimal morning fuss. This is my preferred way to make them now, and I highly recommend it!
Here’s how to easily transform this recipe into an overnight sensation:
- Follow the recipe exactly as written up to step #9, where you’ve cut the dough into 12 rolls and placed them into the greased baking dish.
- Crucially, at this point, **do NOT let them rise a second time.** Instead, immediately cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap.
- Place the covered dish directly into the refrigerator to chill overnight (for 8-12 hours). The cold temperature will significantly slow down the yeast activity, allowing for a slow fermentation that deepens the flavor.
- **Morning Of Baking:** About 1 to 1.5 hours before you plan to bake, remove the cinnamon rolls from the refrigerator. Leave them on the counter, still covered, to come to room temperature and complete their second rise. They should visibly puff up during this time.
- **Speed-Up Tip (Optional):** If you’re in a bit of a rush, you can slightly accelerate the second rise by placing the covered rolls in a *cold* oven, setting the temperature to 100°F (38°C) for 30 minutes, then proceeding with preheating the oven to 350°F (175°C) without removing the rolls.
- Once they’ve risen sufficiently, preheat your oven as usual to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While they bake, prepare your favorite frosting as instructed in the recipe.
- Frost immediately upon removing from the oven, and savor the warm, fresh, and incredibly easy **overnight vegan cinnamon rolls**!
Tips for Success and Common Questions
- Yeast Activation: Always ensure your milk mixture is at the correct temperature (105-115°F / 40-46°C). Too hot, and you’ll kill the yeast; too cold, and it won’t activate properly. This is the most common reason for dough not rising.
- Warm Rising Environment: Dough rises best in a warm, draft-free place. If your kitchen is cool, try placing the bowl in a slightly warm (but turned off) oven, or near a sunny window.
- Don’t Over-Flour: While you need flour for kneading, resist the urge to add too much. A slightly sticky dough often yields a more tender crumb. Add flour gradually if needed.
- Tight Roll for Swirls: Roll the dough as tightly as possible when forming the log to ensure beautiful, defined cinnamon swirls.
- Sharp Knife or Floss: For clean cuts, use a very sharp knife, or even better, unflavored dental floss. Slide the floss under the log, cross it over the top, and pull to cut.
- Storage: Leftover cinnamon rolls can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat gently in the microwave or oven for that fresh-baked taste.
- Freezing: You can freeze baked and frosted cinnamon rolls for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature and reheat. Alternatively, you can freeze the unbaked rolls after the second rise (before baking). Place them in the baking dish, cover tightly, and freeze. When ready to bake, thaw overnight in the fridge, then let rise at room temperature for an hour before baking as usual.

Vegan Cinnamon Rolls
Print Recipe
These Vegan Cinnamon Rolls are simple to make and SO delicious! No one will ever even know that they are vegan 😀
Ingredients
For the dough:
- 1 ½ cups of almond milk, at room temperature*
- ⅓ cup vegan butter, melted
- ¼ cup organic sugar
- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons of yeast)
- 4 cups all-purpose flour, divided
- ¾ teaspoon salt
For the filling:
- ½ cup of vegan butter, at room temperature (soft enough to spread along the dough)
- ¾ cup of brown sugar
- 1 ½ tablespoons of cinnamon
For the frosting:
- 1 cup of powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon of orange juice**
- ½ teaspoon of orange zest
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, mix together the milk, butter, and sugar. Cook over low-medium heat, stirring frequently, until the sugar is dissolved and the liquid reaches 110 degrees F. It should feel like a nice hot bath but should NOT be too hot to touch. If your liquid gets too hot, you need to let it cool down (roughly to 110 degrees) before proceeding, or else you will ruin the yeast. Remove from the heat.
- Sprinkle the packet of yeast over top of the almond milk mixture and let sit for 2 minutes so the yeast can activate. Pour the mixture into a large bowl.
- Add in 3 ½ cups of flour and the salt. Mix with a wooden spoon until just combined. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise for 1 hour. It should rise to nearly double in size.
- Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees F (175°C) and grease a roughly 9×13 inch casserole dish and set aside.
- In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon for the filling. Set aside.
- Add an additional ½ cup of flour to the dough and mix with your hands until combined. It will be a little shaggy at this point. Turn out onto a well-floured surface and knead for about 3 minutes. If the dough is sticky at all, add more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time.
- On a floured surface, roll the dough out into a rectangle that’s roughly 15 x 9 inches. Stretch the corners just a bit to make sure that everything is even.
- Spread the softened butter on the dough, leaving about a ¼ inch margin around the edges. Evenly sprinkle on the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture.
- Starting at one of the longer edges, tightly roll up the dough and place the log seam side down. Cut the dough into 12 even pieces and then place them into the prepared baking dish. Cover the dish and let rise again for 30 minutes. If desired, you can cover the dish and place it into the fridge overnight so they’re ready to bake in the morning.***
- Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Prepare the frosting by whisking together the frosting ingredients.
- Once out of the oven, frost immediately and ENJOY!
Notes
*You can use any plant-based milk that you want here (almond, oat, soy, light coconut).
**If you don’t want the orange flavored syrup, you can leave out the orange zest and swap the juice for a plant-based milk (like almond milk).
***To bake the cinnamon rolls in the morning, prepare them the night before and put them in the fridge BEFORE the second rise. Take them out of the fridge 1 to 1.5 hours before you desire to bake them so that they can rise for a second time (they should puff up a decent bit). To lightly speed up the 2nd rise, you can put them in a *cold* oven for 30 minutes at 100 degrees F BEFORE starting to pre-heat the oven to the baking temperature. Proceed with the recipe as usual.
