An Unforgettable Journey: Roller Derby, Food, and Nature in Oregon
If you’ve been following my adventures on Instagram, you’ve likely seen my enthusiastic posts chronicling my recent trip to the beautiful state of Oregon. This past week was an incredible blend of competitive sport and leisurely exploration, starting with a significant roller derby tournament in Eugene and culminating in a few delightful days spent soaking up the unique atmosphere of Portland. What made this trip even more special was having Stephen by my side. Usually, he holds down the fort at home with our beloved pups while I travel for derby, so having him along for this Pacific Northwest escapade truly enhanced the experience.
Our journey began in Eugene, where my amazing team and I competed in a major roller derby tournament. The energy was palpable, the competition fierce, and the camaraderie amongst teammates was, as always, incredibly uplifting. Roller derby is more than just a sport; it’s a community, a passion that drives us across states and connects us with like-minded athletes. After several intense days on the track, filled with strategic plays and the thrill of competition, we were ready to trade our skates for walking shoes and dive into the vibrant culture of Portland.
Portland: A Food Lover’s Paradise Explored
As soon as we arrived in Portland, the city’s distinctive charm was immediately apparent. Known for its eclectic vibe, thriving arts scene, and unparalleled culinary landscape, Portland promised an adventure for our taste buds. True to its reputation, a significant portion of our time was dedicated to exploring the city’s diverse food offerings, ensuring that lots of delicious food was consumed throughout our stay.
The Iconic Voodoo Doughnut Experience
No trip to Portland would be complete without a visit to the legendary original Voodoo Doughnut. The line snaked around the block, a testament to its enduring popularity, but the anticipation only added to the excitement. Stepping inside, we were greeted by an explosion of vibrant colors, quirky decor, and a dizzying array of uniquely named and decorated doughnuts. From bacon maple bars to cereal-topped creations, choosing was the hardest part. The sheer novelty and deliciousness of these sweet treats made the wait entirely worthwhile, embodying Portland’s “Keep Portland Weird” ethos perfectly.
Embracing the Natural Splendor of Oregon
Beyond its urban delights, Oregon is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, and we made sure to immerse ourselves in its breathtaking landscapes. One of the absolute highlights was our excursion to Multnomah Falls, a true jewel of the Columbia River Gorge. The sheer scale and power of the falls are awe-inspiring, cascading over 600 feet down two major drops. We embarked on the invigorating hike all the way to the top, crossing the iconic Benson Bridge, which offers incredible views between the two tiers of the falls. The ascent was a fantastic workout, rewarded by panoramic vistas of the gorge and the lush, verdant forest below. It was a truly refreshing escape into nature.
Sweet Delights at Salt & Straw
Our culinary explorations continued with a visit to Salt & Straw, an ice cream shop renowned for its inventive and often surprising flavor combinations. This wasn’t just any ice cream; it was an experience in gourmet dessert. We savored scoops of their unique creations, each spoonful a delightful journey of textures and tastes. The commitment to local ingredients and creative pairings truly sets Salt & Straw apart, making it another essential stop for any food enthusiast visiting Portland.
More Pacific Northwest Natural Beauty
After indulging in sweet treats, we continued our exploration of Oregon’s natural wonders. The Pacific Northwest is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, and we reveled in the opportunity to experience more “nature things.” We ventured through lush forests, admired towering trees, and breathed in the crisp, clean air. Every turn offered a postcard-perfect view, reminding us of the region’s incredible biodiversity and the importance of preserving these pristine environments. The serenity found amidst such natural grandeur was a perfect counterpoint to the city’s vibrant energy.
Dining at the Acclaimed Pok Pok
Our quest for Portland’s must-try culinary experiences led us to Pok Pok, a restaurant that came highly recommended by almost everyone we asked. It was repeatedly touted as “the place you HAVE to go eat while in Portland!” With such high expectations, we were eager to sample their renowned Thai-inspired dishes. The atmosphere was bustling, and the menu offered a fascinating array of options. While I personally found myself a little underwhelmed by the overall meal, there was one standout dish that truly captivated my taste buds: the fish sauce wings. These wings were an absolute revelation – crispy, sticky, savory, and perfectly balanced with a hint of sweetness and spice. If I had known just how incredible they were, I would have happily ordered them as my entire meal and been completely satisfied. They were, without a doubt, a highlight of our dining adventures.
Reflecting on an Amazing Oregon Adventure
Our week in Oregon, from the competitive fervor of roller derby in Eugene to the gastronomic and natural wonders of Portland, was truly a trip to remember. It was a perfect blend of high-energy sport, urban exploration, and serene immersion in nature. The Pacific Northwest, with its vibrant cities and majestic landscapes, offers an unparalleled travel experience. While I took about 300 more photos documenting every moment – from quirky shops to stunning sunsets – I’ll spare you from those and share just the highlights here. It was a joy to explore this unique corner of the world with Stephen, creating memories that will last a lifetime. If you’re planning a trip to the West Coast, make sure to put Portland and the surrounding natural beauty of Oregon on your must-visit list. You won’t be disappointed!
Happy weekend, friends, and may your own adventures be just as fulfilling!
