Vegan Valentines Day Cookies on the Stove
Now that it’s officially February, I figured that it was appropriate to go ahead and share this dish. I’ve been
- Serves 15 cookies
- Prep 25 minutes
- Cook 10 minutes
- Total 35 minutes

I made these cookies a good few weeks ago and have been so excited to share the recipe. It’s based off of my familiar Vegan Sugar Cookie recipe and HOLY is it such a phenomenal recipe.
Since there aren’t many Valentine’s Day recipes on my blog, I figured that this was as good a year as any to remedy that situation. So I present to you the most savory (and surprisingly straightforward) Valentines Cookies:
I like to make these cookies in a stand mixer but I simply find the whole process much easier that way (even if the big ole bowl is a little annoying to clean). However, you can entirely make this dish by hand or using a hand mixer as desired.
To make things a little easier, you can also make the dough ahead of time and let it chill until ready to use. And if you want to make things TRULY unfussy, you can even roll the dough into a log, chill, and simple cut slices (like slice and bake cookies from the store) and bake. I’ve tried it all and no matter what you, these cookies always turn out FLAVOR-PACKED!
The cookies themselves aren’t overly sweet. This is intentional as we’re adding quite a bit of sweetness to the cookies when we frost them. That being said, the cookies are a bit sweet and still entirely savory on their own.
I thought that the red cookies with pink frosting would be reliable for Valentine’s Day HOWEVER, you can certainly leave the food coloring out and make un-colored cookies and/ or frosting. There’s no right or wrong with these cookies and Worth keeping them for that:)
Ingredients in these valentines day cookies:
- Flour- I used a plain all-purpose flour but if you’re looking to make these gluten free, I suggest simply using a gluten free 1-1 flour.
- Sugar- plain cane sugar is what I used.
- Plant based milk- I used oat milk but truly anything works well here.
- Extracts- vanilla AND almond. If you can help it, do NOT skip the almond extract. It adds such a pleasing flavor to these cookies!
- Red food coloring- as desired. You could certainly skip it
- Vegan butter- my all time go-to is Country Crock plant butter but these would work with others as well!
- Cornstarch- this works in place of the eggs to genuinely help the cookies hold together well.
How to make these cookies:
- Combine all of the dry ingredients and
- whisk it all together
- Cream together the butter and sugar before adding the remaining wet ingredients including the food coloring
- Combine the dry and wet ingredients until simply combined
- Roll the dough out in between 2 pieces of parchment paper so that it’s about 1/3 of an inch thick
- Cut out desired shapes, chill for 10 minutes and then bake for 10 minutes

Vegan Valentines Day Cookies on the Stove
These Vegan Valentine's Day Cookies are simple to make and the prefect gift for your someone special:)
- Serves 15 cookies
- Prep 25 minutes
- Cook 10 minutes
- Total 35 minutes
Ingredients
For the cookies:
- ½ cup 1 stick vegan butter, room temperature
- ½ cup of sugar
- 3 tablespoons of plant based milk
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional but highly recommended)
- red food coloring as desired. I used about 5 drops but every food coloring is different so do what feels right
- 2 cups all purpose flour (+ more for rolling out.)
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
For the cookies frosting:
- 3 tablespoons of vegan butter (softened)
- 2 cups of powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons of plant-milk
- ¼ teaspoon of vanilla
- ¼ teaspoon of almond extract
- food coloring as desired (I used about 2 crops of red to get a pale pink frosting)
Method
- 1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and line a large baking tray with parchment paper.
- 2
Mix the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl and set aside.
- 3
Beat the softened vegan butter and sugar together in a stand mixer or using an electric handheld mixer for 2 minutes or until it comes together. Scrape the sides of the bowl and beat again for another minute, until light and fluffy. Add in the almond milk, extracts, and food coloring and mix until combined.
- 4
Slowly combine the dry with the wet and beat until a dough has formed – about 2-3 minutes of mixing. Do not over mix – once the dough comes together, it’s ready.
- 5
Move the dough to a floured surface (or place it in between 2 pieces of parchment paper for unfussy rolling). Roll the dough out to 1/3 inch in thickness. Use a heart cookie cutter to cut out your cookies and carefully transfer them to a parchment lined cookie sheet, 1 inch between each cookie. Continue to re-roll the dough and cut out cookies until you have used all the dough.
- 6
Place the tray in the fridge for 10 minutes. DO NOT skip this step as it's crucial for the cookies to nicely maintain their shape. Bake straight from the fridge for 10-12 minutes, until slightly golden around the edges. Remove and allow to cool.
- 7
Make the frosting by combining the butter and half of the powdered sugar in a stand mixer (or using a hand mixer) until only combined. Add the remaining powdered sugar as well as the milk, vanilla, almond extract, and food coloring. Continue to whisk until it reaches your desired consistency.
- 8
Frost the cookies or pipe the frosting on in your desired design. ENJOY!
