How to Make a Flax Egg from the Pantry

Looking for an unfussy and healthy way to replace old-style eggs in your regular baked goods? Look no further than a simple, TWO ingredient Flax Egg!

I’ve mentioned flax eggs quite a few times over the years so I figured that it would be beneficial to tell you a little bit more about them! They’re most often used to replace ONE long-used egg in baking but can be used in other ways as well.

Simply starting out, I suggest that you use recipes specifically designed with a flax egg in mind as opposed to using a recipe that is meant for a regular egg. Once you get more comfortable with how flax eggs work, you can start experimenting some more!

What is a flax egg?

A flax egg is a simple mixture of ground flaxseed meal + water. Once it sits for a few minutes, it thickens up quite a bit and roughly resembles the texture and thickness of an egg white.

They’re used often in vegan/ egg-free baking as a binding agent and work great as an egg replacement. Hence the name flax “egg”.

How to make a flax egg:

One of my regular things about flax eggs is that they’re Straightforward to make. All you do is combine the flaxseed meal with the water and give it a little stir. Let it sit for about 5 minutes to let it thicken up a bit. AND THAT’S IT! Once it’s made, you can add it into your recipe as you would a old-style egg.

Flax egg ratio:

For one flax egg you need ONE TABLESPOON of ground flaxseed meal + 2.5 TABLESPOONS of water.

That’s it. Simply 2 simple ingredients (if you can even call water an ingredient).
