The air crackles with an exhilarating mix of anticipation and a touch of nervous energy as I prepare to embark on a journey to Asheville, NC, for my very first playoff tournament. This isn’t just another game; it’s the culmination of countless hours of sweat, strategic planning, and unwavering dedication from every single member of my team. While the thrill of competitive play is undeniably powerful, my deepest excitement stems from the profound camaraderie we’ve forged and the sheer potential of what we can achieve together on this grand stage. It’s a testament to the hard work, the sacrifices, and the collective spirit that has propelled us to this moment, a moment we’ve all dreamt about since the season began.
For weeks, the tournament has loomed on the horizon, a distant yet compelling goal. But it wasn’t until a seemingly ordinary day, when an unexpected delivery landed in my mailbox, that the reality of “THIS weekend” truly hit home. The tangible reminder transformed abstract anticipation into a palpable sense of immediate urgency and thrill, a clear sign that the big event was no longer a distant dream but an imminent reality ready to unfold.
These inspiring postcards were anonymously distributed to our entire charter roster, a clever and heartwarming gesture that undoubtedly sparked a shared surge of motivation amongst us all. While the sender remains officially unconfirmed, I confess to harboring a sneaking suspicion about the thoughtful individual behind this brilliant act of team encouragement. It’s moments like these, small yet significant, that underscore the deep bonds and shared passion within our roller derby family, amplifying the collective energy as we head into the playoffs.
The Road to Asheville: A Season of Grit and Growth
Our journey to the playoffs has been anything but smooth; it’s been a winding road paved with resilience, strategic breakthroughs, and unwavering commitment. Every practice, every drill, every strategy meeting has been an incremental step towards this pivotal weekend. We’ve pushed our physical limits, enduring grueling training sessions designed to hone our agility, strength, and endurance. From speed work to intricate pack drills, from offensive blocking schemes to defensive wall formations, each aspect of our game has been meticulously refined. The mental game has been equally demanding, requiring us to maintain focus, learn from our mistakes, and bounce back stronger after setbacks.
Beyond the physical and tactical training, this season has been a profound journey of team building. We’ve celebrated victories together, offered support during defeats, and navigated personal challenges as a unified force. The locker room conversations, the shared meals, the long bus rides – these moments have woven an unbreakable tapestry of trust and understanding among us. We’ve learned each other’s strengths and weaknesses, anticipated moves before they happen, and developed a non-verbal language on the track that only true teammates understand. This deep cohesion is our secret weapon, a foundation built on mutual respect and a shared desire for excellence.
The roller derby community is unique, and making it to the WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association) playoffs is a monumental achievement, signifying that we are among the elite teams in the sport. It validates every early morning practice, every late-night strategy session, and every bruise earned along the way. This tournament isn’t just about winning; it’s about showcasing the culmination of our collective potential, laying every ounce of our hard-earned skill, passion, and spirit onto the track from the very first whistle on Friday morning. We are ready, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally, to face the challenges ahead.
Inspiration and Aspiration: The Heart of Our Team
Lately, I’ve been incredibly inspired by every single person on our team. Each skater brings a unique strength, a different perspective, and an unwavering commitment that elevates us all. There’s the veteran who calmly guides us through high-pressure situations, the rookie whose fearless dives ignite our competitive spirit, the strategist who sees openings no one else does, and the unsung hero who tirelessly jams or blocks, always putting the team first. Their dedication, their resilience, and their sheer passion for roller derby are infectious. Witnessing their growth, their triumphs, and their determination to overcome obstacles has been a constant source of motivation for me. I am immensely proud and incredibly fortunate to be making this trip to Asheville with such an extraordinary group of athletes and individuals.
Asheville itself offers a vibrant backdrop for this high-stakes competition. While our primary focus will be on the bouts, the energy of a new city, particularly one known for its eclectic charm and natural beauty, adds an extra layer to the experience. It’s a fresh environment, promising new challenges and memories both on and off the track. The atmosphere of a major WFTDA playoff tournament is something truly special. The roar of the crowd, the intensity of the competition, the sight of other highly skilled teams – it’s a sensory overload that fuels the adrenaline and sharpens the focus. Every team here has earned their spot, meaning every game will be a fierce battle, demanding our absolute best from start to finish.

It’s an incredible opportunity for friends, family, and fans of the sport to stay connected, feel the energy, and be part of our journey, even from afar. Your virtual presence and encouragement mean the world to us as we lay it all out on the track.
The roller coaster of emotions leading up to, during, and immediately after a major tournament is incredibly intense. From the nervous jitters before the first whistle to the exhilaration of a hard-won point, every moment is packed with feeling. I’m certain that once the final jam concludes and the dust settles, I’ll have a multitude of stories and reflections to share about the experience. But for now, the immediate task at hand is much more pragmatic: the crucial art of packing! Preparing for a multi-day tournament requires careful planning – uniforms, gear, recovery tools, and a mental checklist of everything needed to perform at peak level. It’s an essential part of the pre-game ritual, a quiet moment of preparation before the storm of competition.
Following the intense competition in Asheville, our team will embark on a much-deserved two-week break from regular practice. This period of rest and recovery is vital for both our physical and mental well-being, allowing our bodies to heal and our minds to decompress after the rigorous demands of the playoffs. But for an athlete, “rest” often involves a different kind of activity. My agenda for those couple of weeks is already shaping up to be quite active and diverse.
First on the list is a challenging 50-mile bike race. It’s an opportunity to channel my competitive energy into a different discipline, cross-train, and maintain a high level of fitness while giving my roller derby specific muscles a chance to recuperate. This kind of cross-training is not only beneficial for physical health but also provides a refreshing mental break, keeping me engaged and motivated. Simultaneously, I’m looking forward to rekindling my love for CrossFit. This high-intensity training regimen is fantastic for overall strength, conditioning, and explosiveness, all crucial components for a successful roller derby skater. I’m already thinking ahead to the 2014 season of derby, using this break to build a stronger foundation and fine-tune my physical capabilities for what promises to be another exciting year on the track.
Beyond athletic pursuits, I’m also eager to dive into some more personal, calming projects. Revamping my garden is high on the list – there’s something incredibly satisfying about nurturing plants and creating a beautiful outdoor space. It’s a wonderful contrast to the high-octane world of roller derby, offering a sense of peace and accomplishment through a different kind of effort. And finally, perhaps the most low-key item on the agenda: maybe painting my coffee table. It’s a small project, a simple refresh, that perfectly encapsulates the transition from intense competition to a period of relaxation and personal rejuvenation. This blend of active recovery and personal projects allows for a complete recharge, preparing me not just for the next derby season, but for whatever exciting challenges lie ahead.
