The Marvel of the Split Decision Pie Pan: A Culinary Game-Changer

For those who have followed our culinary adventures, you might recall our previous explorations with the revolutionary Chicago Metallic Split Decision Pie Pan. This ingenious bakeware truly transforms how you approach meal and dessert preparation, offering unparalleled versatility and convenience.

Our initial venture showcased a unique Dinner and Dessert Pie, seamlessly combining a hearty chicken pot pie on one side with a comforting apple pie on the other. This proved to be a fantastic solution for families with varied preferences, or for those simply looking to enjoy both savory and sweet without needing two separate dishes. For our vegetarian friends, recreating the savory side is a breeze by simply halving our Vegan Pot Pie recipe.

Another beloved creation from this versatile pan was a Healthy Ice Cream Pie. One half was dedicated to a classic Oreo ice cream, while the other featured a rich peanut butter chocolate ice cream. With warmer weather on the horizon, the idea of revisiting this refreshing dessert is more appealing than ever. The Split Decision Pie Pan makes catering to different cravings effortless and fun, truly embodying its name.

Unmatched Versatility: Two Bases, One Pan

One of the standout features of the Chicago Metallic Split Decision Pie Pan is its thoughtful design, which includes two interchangeable bases. This means you’re not limited to just the split design. You can easily switch to the regular, single-base option to use it as a conventional pie pan whenever the need arises. This flexibility makes it a truly indispensable tool in any kitchen, maximizing its utility beyond just “split decisions.” Whether you’re making a classic fruit pie or experimenting with a dual-flavor dessert, this pan has you covered.

A Perfectly Vegan and Effortlessly Simple Dessert

For this particular recipe, we focused on creating a dessert that is not only incredibly simple to prepare but also entirely vegan. We believe delicious treats should be accessible to everyone, and this pie certainly delivers on that promise. The combination of rich chocolate and bright strawberries offers a balanced flavor profile that will satisfy any sweet tooth, without compromising on dietary preferences.

Side One: Decadent Chocolate Silken Pie

The first half of our split decision pie features a sumptuously smooth chocolate silken filling. What makes this recipe truly remarkable is how quickly it comes together – we’re talking mere minutes of prep time! The secret lies in the silken tofu, which, when blended, creates an unbelievably creamy and luxurious texture, mimicking traditional chocolate mousse without any dairy. Combined with rich dairy-free chocolate chips and a natural, drippy nut butter, this filling is pure indulgence. After a quick blend, it simply needs about an hour to chill in the refrigerator, allowing it to set into a perfect, sliceable consistency. The result is a deeply satisfying, rich chocolate experience that’s surprisingly light and incredibly easy.

Side Two: Vibrant Fresh Strawberry Pie

On the other side, we have a classic-tasting fresh strawberry pie, thoughtfully adapted to be vegan-friendly. While many traditional recipes use gelatin for setting, we’ve opted for agar powder. Agar powder is an excellent plant-based alternative to gelatin, derived from seaweed, and works wonders in creating a firm yet tender pie filling. It’s readily available online and sometimes found in local health food stores, making it an accessible substitute for those following a vegetarian or vegan diet. If you are not vegetarian, you can certainly use gelatin as a direct swap. The process involves a simple simmer of sugar, cornstarch, and water, followed by whisking in the agar powder. This mixture is then poured over fresh, quartered strawberries, creating a glistening, fruity half that bursts with natural flavor. The contrast between the creamy chocolate and the fresh, slightly tart strawberries is simply divine.

The Essence of “No-Bake” Convenience

While we lovingly refer to this as a “no-bake” pie, it’s worth noting a minor technicality: the graham cracker crust requires a brief 7-8 minutes in the oven. However, this minimal baking time is a small step for a huge gain in flavor and texture. Beyond the crust, the entire process for both fillings is genuinely no-bake, relying solely on refrigeration to set and thicken to perfection. This makes it an ideal dessert for those hot summer days when turning on the oven for extended periods is the last thing you want to do.

This pie is designed for ultimate convenience. You can whip it up on the day you plan to serve it, allowing just a couple of hours for chilling. Alternatively, for effortless entertaining, prepare it the day before and let it chill in the fridge overnight. This make-ahead capability ensures stress-free hosting, allowing you more time to enjoy your guests and the delicious dessert.

This dual-flavored pie is an absolute dream for summer gatherings and parties. It effortlessly caters to different tastes, ensuring everyone finds a favorite. Its cool, refreshing nature is perfect for warmer weather, offering a delightful respite from the heat. Moreover, the ease and speed with which it comes together mean you can spend less time in the kitchen and more time enjoying the festivities.

Recipe: Split Decision Pie (Strawberry & Chocolate)

A vibrant split decision pie, one half chocolate, one half fresh strawberry, garnished with mint.

By Brita Britnell

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 20 minutes (plus chilling)

Yields: 1 pie

This split decision pie is simple to make and all so so delicious! It’s a perfect no-bake dessert for any occasion, offering two delightful flavors in one.

Ingredients

For the Crust:

  • 1 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs*
  • ⅓ cup organic cane sugar
  • 6 tablespoons butter, melted (or vegan butter for a fully vegan pie)
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of nutmeg, optional

For the Chocolate Filling:

  • 8 ounces silken tofu
  • ¼ cup plant-based milk (oat milk or any preferred variety)
  • ⅓ cup natural, drippy nut butter (avoid “no-stir” types)
  • 6 ounces dairy-free chocolate chips, melted

For the Strawberry Filling:

  • ¼ cup organic cane sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon agar powder*
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, quartered (cut smaller if strawberries are large)
  • Optional mint for garnish

Instructions

For the Crust:

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly spray your split decision pie pan with cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, mix all of the crust ingredients until fully combined and the mixture resembles wet sand.
  3. Divide the mixture evenly in half and press each half firmly into the separate sections of the pie pan, ensuring it is compact and even.
  4. Bake in the pre-heated oven for 7-8 minutes, or until the edges begin to turn a light golden brown. Set aside to cool while you prepare the fillings.

For the Chocolate Filling:

  1. Combine all the chocolate filling ingredients (silken tofu, plant-based milk, nut butter, and melted dairy-free chocolate chips) in a blender or food processor. Blend until the mixture is completely creamy and smooth, with no lumps remaining.
  2. Pour this velvety chocolate filling into one side of the cooled pie crust.
  3. Place the pie in the fridge to chill while you prepare the strawberry filling.

For the Strawberry Filling:

  1. Over medium heat, combine the sugar, cornstarch, and water in a small saucepan. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring constantly, and cook for about 3 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  2. Remove the saucepan from the heat and vigorously whisk in the agar powder. The mixture should thicken quickly as the agar activates. Set it aside to cool slightly.
  3. Arrange the quartered fresh strawberries neatly in the other half of the pie pan (the side without the chocolate filling).
  4. Carefully pour the agar mixture evenly over the arranged strawberries. If your strawberries are cold, the liquid mixture will likely harden quite rapidly.
  5. Place the entire pie back into the fridge to chill for at least 1 hour, or even overnight for the best results and firmest set.
  6. Before serving, garnish the strawberry side with fresh mint leaves and the chocolate side with a sprinkle of sea salt or a few curls of shaved chocolate for an extra touch of elegance. Enjoy your beautifully crafted Split Decision Pie!

Notes

  • *To make graham cracker crumbs, simply pulse graham crackers in a food processor about 10-15 times until fine crumbs are formed. Sift or pick out any larger pieces that may remain for a smoother crust.
  • *Agar powder is a fantastic and relatively inexpensive vegan alternative to gelatin. You can often find it online or in specialty health food stores. It helps achieve a firm, jelly-like texture similar to gelatin.
