The Jemma Chronicle

Celebrating Jemma’s First Month: A Journey of Love and Milestones

It feels like just yesterday we welcomed our precious Jemma into the world, and yet, in what seems like a blink of an eye, she’s already gracefully passed her one-month milestone. The passage of time with a newborn is truly mind-blowing; each day brings new discoveries and an ever-deepening love that expands our hearts in ways we never thought possible. This past month has been a beautiful whirlwind of firsts, learning curves, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for this tiny, perfect human.

Her growth has been nothing short of astonishing. Jemma has already gained an impressive nearly 50% of her birth weight, transforming from a delicate newborn into a robust little infant before our very eyes. We find ourselves marveling at how quickly she’s outgrowing her initial wardrobe, almost too big for many of her newborn-sized clothes. Thankfully, we are incredibly well-prepared for her rapid growth spurts! Thanks to the generosity of friends and family, and an abundance of lovely hand-me-downs, Jemma has a truly ridiculous amount of 0-3 month outfits just waiting to be worn. It’s a joy to dress her in these tiny ensembles, knowing she’s thriving and growing stronger every day.

Navigating Newborn Sleep: Our Little Dreamer

So far, our journey with a newborn has been remarkably smooth, especially when it comes to sleep. While most new parents often find themselves in a constant state of sleep deprivation, we’ve been incredibly fortunate. We typically experience only about one “bad” night a week, where Jemma decides to stay wide awake and playful until the wee hours of 3, 4, or even 5 AM. These nights are challenging, of course, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

On most days, our little one surprises us with her agreeable sleep patterns. She tends to sleep quite well during the day, making the most of her naps. The evenings see her more active, exploring her new world with bright eyes and tiny movements. But, much to our relief, she usually settles down around midnight, embarking on a solid stretch of sleep through the night, only waking briefly for a feed before drifting back off. Everyone we talk to, especially those with more experience in parenthood, assures us that we should be counting our blessings for such a good sleeper. We certainly are, thanking the universe daily for this peaceful gift, which allows us to also catch much-needed rest and fully savor these precious early weeks.

The Enduring Power of Memories: Inspired by Family Videos

The profound importance of capturing and preserving these fleeting moments truly hit home last year. After my dad passed away, my siblings and I spent countless hours sorting through his belongings. It was during this bittersweet process that we stumbled upon a treasure trove of old family home movies – tapes we had never seen before. Each reel was a window into a past we cherished, yet had almost forgotten.

Among these rediscovered gems, one particular tape became an instant favorite. It documented the weekend of my brother’s and my baptism, a special occasion that brought much of our extended family to stay with us. The opening scene of this beloved tape featured a candid clip of my dad jumping on the trampoline with my brother and me. It was filmed so naturally, almost as if the camera’s presence went unnoticed, capturing a raw, unfiltered slice of life. It was real; genuinely, wonderfully real.

I distinctly remember a moment where my dad, with playful exuberance, bounced my two-year-old brother a little too high, startling him into tears. Without missing a beat, my dad scooped him up, showering him with kisses until his cries dissolved into infectious laughter. Watching that film, hearing my dad’s voice again, seeing his loving gestures, brought tears to all of our eyes. It was a powerful, visceral reminder of his immense love for us and the beautiful, spontaneous joy he brought into our lives. Those videos became a small, invaluable capsule of love, frozen in time.

Documenting Every Precious Moment: Jemma’s Early Chapters

It’s with this deep understanding of how profoundly impactful these captured memories can be that I approach Jemma’s early life. I want that same legacy for my children – a collection of these small, precious moments, preserved so they can always revisit them. I never could have fully grasped the immense significance of those clips until my father was gone, and those videos became the most tangible, heartwarming reminders I had of him. They are more than just recordings; they are windows to our shared history, filled with love, laughter, and authentic human connection.

Inspired by this realization, I’ve embarked on a mission: I’ve been filming A LOT. Perhaps even too much, but I believe there’s no such thing as too many memories when it comes to your child’s first year. My plan is to meticulously go through all the footage, carefully edit out the less significant bits, and compile it into a beautiful, heartwarming film. This film will be Jemma’s personal time capsule, a cinematic narrative of her early days that she can watch and cherish one day, connecting her to her origins and the love that surrounded her from birth.

Already, I’ve managed to capture so many incredible “firsts.” I filmed the heartwarming moment she met her aunt and uncle – my brother and his wonderful wife – seeing their faces light up with joy. I also documented her introduction to our beloved dogs, a memory she might not consciously recall but one she’ll undoubtedly hear us talk about constantly throughout her life. One particularly sweet moment I managed to sneakily film was Mr. Britnell reading a book to her when she was barely a week old, a tender scene of father-daughter bonding. I’ve also made sure to capture all of her grandparents holding her, their eyes sparkling with pride, and even had the immense privilege of filming her two living great-grandparents as they held her – a truly generational embrace that spans nearly a century.

I mean, just look at this picture! How incredibly sweet is this moment? The oldest Britnell gently holding hands with the youngest, a profound connection bridging generations. My heart absolutely melts completely every time I see it. These are the moments that truly define our family story, snapshots of love passed down through time.

And then there was the magical moment I managed to catch her laughing for the very first time on camera. It was a genuine, bubbling burst of pure infant joy, and I am not exaggerating when I say I have watched that precious clip at least a hundred times. It’s a sound, a sight, that instantly brightens any day and reminds us of the profound innocence and happiness that Jemma brings into our lives. These are the spontaneous, unscripted moments that make all the diligent filming worthwhile – treasures to be replayed and cherished endlessly.

Discovering Jemma’s Unique Personality and Preferences

At one month old, Jemma is already starting to reveal glimpses of her unique personality and a clear set of likes and dislikes. It’s fascinating to observe these tiny preferences emerging. For example, she absolutely adores taking baths. The warm water seems to soothe and delight her, making bath time a peaceful and enjoyable ritual for all of us.

Her absolute favorite sleeping position is undoubtedly on her stomach, nestled securely on her daddy’s chest. The warmth, the heartbeat, and the gentle rise and fall of his breathing provide her with unparalleled comfort. While she doesn’t show much enthusiasm for the baby swing, she will tolerate it for a short period if we need a moment. Pacifiers are met with mixed reactions; sometimes she’ll happily accept one, other times she’ll completely refuse. When it comes to swaddling, she has a very specific demand: she prefers to be swaddled, but ONLY if her arms are left out, allowing her enough freedom to bring her tiny fingers to her mouth. It’s these specific little quirks that make her so endearing and uniquely Jemma.

Anticipating Changes: Jemma’s Developing Features

Observing Jemma’s physical features is another constant source of fascination. Her hair color is very similar to mine, a lovely dark shade, and her eyes are a captivating deep blue – a feature that truly makes us swoon! However, as many new parents know, these things can often change in the early months. We’re half expecting either her hair or eye color to transform at any moment. Babies’ eyes, in particular, often shift in hue around six months of age. We also have Mr. Britnell’s experience as a reference; he was born with brown hair that later fell out, only to grow back a distinct red. So, we’re keenly watching and eagerly anticipating how her features will develop and settle. It’s an exciting little genetic mystery unfolding before our eyes.

A Favorite Memory: Leaving the Hospital

Okay, I absolutely have to share one more photo that holds a truly special place in my heart! This particular image was captured in the elevator as we were leaving the hospital, just after Jemma’s birth. And honestly, it’s quite possibly one of my favorite photos of her to date. I can’t even begin to fully articulate why I love it so much, but there are so many layers to its charm.

Perhaps it’s the hilariously firm way she grabbed onto the car seat straps, as if already asserting her presence in the world. Or maybe it’s the fact that the adorable little outfit she’s wearing was entirely too big for her at the time, adorably swamping her tiny frame, and now, just a month later, it’s already way too small. It’s a testament to how quickly these little ones grow. But most likely, it’s the priceless look on her face – an expression that is SO undeniably her father’s, conveying a perfect blend of surprise and mild indignation, as if to say, “You’ve GOT to be kidding me, I’m out of here!” It perfectly captures the spirit of our little Jemma, even at just a few days old, and it brings a smile to my face every single time.

Soaking Up Every Second: Reflections on Maternity Leave

As my maternity leave slowly draws to a close, with only about two weeks left before I transition back to work, I find myself in a constant state of trying to soak up every single ounce of baby cuddles. It’s a bittersweet feeling, knowing these uninterrupted moments are finite. I’m intentionally allowing myself to sleep in with her, to hold her close, and to simply exist in the moment, doing absolutely nothing productive for hours on end, just relishing her presence. This time is invaluable, a bubble of pure connection and tenderness.

I’m making a conscious effort to stay off my phone while I’m with her, resisting the urge to scroll or multitask. Instead, my focus is entirely on Jemma – staring at every tiny inch of her, memorizing her features, her expressions, and her soft, new skin. We take her on countless walks, even though she predictably sleeps through 99% of them. It’s less about the destination and more about the fresh air, the rhythm of our steps, and the simple act of being together.

Whispers of a Future: Dreams and Conversations with Our Baby

During these walks, and really, throughout our days, I talk to her A LOT. I tell her about all the incredible places in the world I can’t wait to take her, imagining future adventures. I talk about the sports I’d love for her to play, and just as importantly, all the other activities and passions she might discover. I’ve shared stories about how her father and I met, the excitement of roller derby, and the simple joys of my garden. She understands none of it, of course, but she listens intently, her eyes wide, as if I’m recounting the most captivating story she’s ever heard. It’s a beautiful, one-sided conversation that deepens our bond, filling our home with love and the promise of a shared future.

Our Journey Continues: Monthly Updates

That’s our incredible Jemma, one month into her beautiful journey. It’s been a month filled with rapid growth, precious memories, and an ever-evolving understanding of parenthood. I plan to continue these updates every month, documenting her milestones, her emerging personality, and all the little moments that make our hearts sing. So, stay tuned for more glimpses into Jemma’s world! We can’t wait to see what the next month brings.
